Doctor Scratch wrote:I have to agree: these ELW diaries are incredible. One that struck me from Pt. II was the entry saying that "DOM interested in LDS colonizing in Iowa, Illinois, and throughout USA." Pretty creepy.

I think B23 made this point before, but whoever wrote those index listings had a flair for blunt, near sarcastic renderings. Nearly all of the entries are strange, spooky or hilarious. So far, they are the gem of the collection for me, though I have to give honorable mention to the Midgley/McMurrin correspondence.

There is a great deal pertaining to how much of an issue evolution was for the authorities in the 30's: the arguments over "pre-Adamites" figure a lot larger in GA response to B.H. Roberts' work than I would have imagined.

I'm still working my way through the stash, sorting out what I really don't need to read from what may be of interest to me specifically.

I'm finding some of the 1880's diary passages of James E. Talmage charming and humble. He's heading for some pre-Adamic trouble, but he's trying very hard to be as well read and fair as possible.
