Without viewing death as a stepping stone to an eternal reward?

Yes
I fail to understand what you said earlier, but I'm happy that you can see that the path to a good life is not only found through Christianity.

I have many times but I know I could have done more. When our neighbor needs help do we help? I do but I know I could do more. It is what we do that matters.
Is it really charity if the reason for the service is to please a God? Is it really charity when the reason for the service is some future eternal reward? Or avoiding some eternal punishment? If someone puts a gun to your head demands all your cash, are you being generous in giving him your money? I think those that help their neighbor without any want or desire of eternal credits are the ones that are showing true charity.

If your charity is to please God and not a love of your fellow man then it is not charity but fear of God. It will be counted for works but not in love. The most important commandments are to love God and to love your fellow man. If you fear God without love then you operate under the law. If you do not love your fellow man then you live under the law. The law of works is better than doing the work of Satan but it is a hard road.
