It sounds like you, as an outsider and an amateur, misunderstood that they were saying that anything published by the church (as evidenced by an IRI copyright) is consistent with doctrine.

But since you say the "polygamy is forever" wasn't doctrinal since it was never published, neither was Joseph Smith's polygamy as practiced during his lifetime, since it wasn't published until well after his death.
