Bishop Puts Locks On 18 Year Old's Cell Phone

My 18 year old son just told me last night that one of his good friends who is planning on turning his papers in soon, met with the new Bishop a couple of nights ago and the Bishop asked for his cell phone, put locks on a bunch of the apps and then set the password so that only he will know it.

This young man has struggled with what he calls his "dark demon" for a couple of years now and is just riddled with guilt over it. He had to meet with the former Bishop every week to "report" his progress or set backs. He even tied his hands to his bed posts every night at one point.

Ok....I hate this! Hate this! Hate this!

He's told my son that he doesn't even want to serve a mission but knows his parents would flip out if he doesn't. He's a great kid and it kills me to see what this does to him.

This new Bishop is so controlling and I have never cared for him at all. I know there are wonderful Bishops out there that would not even consider doing this, but has anyone else heard of this being done?

I told my son that the bottom line is that this young man is allowing the Bishop to have power and control over him....but I completely understand what he's going through. Ugh!

Pure BS; that the Bishop is a control freak. The Bishop is merely operating on the assumption the kid wants to go and the kid has agreed (if this story is true) to limitations that would help with his "dark problem". The problem is actually between the boy and his parents; a failure to communicate.

If he has told the Bishop he doesn't want to go, then this story is fake or being modified for negative effect.

I doubt that any bishop can take a cell phone away from anybody. It is an invasion of privacy. And where are the boys parents in all this? I think that you are experiencing an early april fool's story.

I've met enough control-freak bishops to realize that, though I'm skeptical, this isn't that far-fetched a story.

The whole thing just kind of creeps me out anyway....the obsession with grown men questioning young boys (and girls) about this and then making them feel so guilty regarding doing something that is completely natural and normal.

And so finally we get to the point. The kid was using his cell phone to look at pornography - a substantial transgression of the law of chastity - and there is no possibility of affirming his worthiness to go on a mission while under the influence of this weakness.

I see that both your intellect and personal maturity have continued to deteriorate at a rather alarming rate since we last tangled. Well, I anticipated as much.

In any case, I thought it interesting that Madison concealed the actual issue until it came out only well into the thread.

And yes, 18 year old men, as well as boys and girls of a younger age, do need to confess such sins to their Bishop when necessary as part of the repentance process. That is the Lord's way and that is one of the core functions of the Bishop who is the Lord's judge in Israel at the ward level and who has the mantel of authority and spiritual endowments - given through those possessing the keys and authority themselves to bestow that calling and authority - required to fulfill that office in the priesthood.

The dirty little secret here, as always, is that if it weren't for the traditional obsessive fixation upon sex by the secular Left and the cult of eroticism and of the atomized, autonomous self that lies at the very dark heart of "liberalism," there would be no need to have this conversation, nor any question of the abject moral squalor represented by pornography and its internal psychology, which I have come to call "the pornscape," a term I use in one of the books I'm in process of writing.

Neither myself nor my son are too interested in what the church stresses or what they call viewing porn.

What do you mean "what they call" viewing porn?

How would I handle what? Him doing what I'd imagine 99% of teenage boys do? I'm not concerned.

Is this an admission of moral vacancy, or just classic post-baby boom generation disinterest in anything of any actual moral or philosophical import?

My son is taking more than a full load at college and when he's not there, he's either home studying or with his girlfriend and other friends. If he started spending hours in his room behind closed doors, I'd be concerned no matter what was causing him to do this....but unless something starts interfering with him living a normal life, I'm not staying up at night worrying about porn or masturbation (which my husband has told him "better that than getting a girl pregnant").

So what we have here are a couple of very traditional, morally dopey and intellectually shallow liberal parents devoid of moral imagination or bearing and unconcerned with anything beyond "normal" life (i.e., enjoying the carnal security and material indulgences provided by a good job and advanced education and hoping not to die and dissolve into the waiting maw of oblivion to soon to get one's fill before the end comes) and who's getting voted off the island next week.

You're son is doomed unless he rejects much of what you've taught him and finds the gospel of Jesus Christ for himself and comes unto Christ with full purpose of heart.

I would advise the same for you, as well, as when you pass on from this life, there is no oblivion waiting, but accountability.
