Masturbation Interrogations--The differentiating experience

My Bishop when I was 12 asked ALL the youth. Some old geezer at the MTC (I don't remember what his position was - not the MTC president - maybe a counselor?) when I was there asked ALL the missionaries in my group. I guess we must all be anti-Mormons.

The first time I met my new Mission President, he asked me point blank as I was taking a seat in his office:

"Any problems with masturbation".

While living in the singles ward the bishop took my temple recommend away because I confessed to have masturbated during one of his interviews.

It has ever been my experience that bishops don't look kindly on those who masturbate.

Can one write minimizingly about masturbation without being suspected of the act? No matter. These are my thoughts:

Virtually all of the onus on the topic comes from Onan. In Gen. 38: 8-10. When his brother is slain because he displeased the Lord, Onan is commanded to go in to his sister-in-law, his brother's widow, and raise up seed unto his brother via her. Onan, knowing the children would not be his, in an act of gross disobedience masturbated and made a mess on the carpeting instead of having sex with her. For that, God killed him, too. There are at least three sins going on here. #1: He refuses to honor his brother's line and continue it as custom and law required. #2: He scorns his sister-in-law by refusing to do right by her. #3: In a deliberate "in-your-face" to God, he shows extreme contempt for deity and the laws laid down by God. And, uh, oh yeah; he masturbates. My personal take is that masturbation was a peripheral sin if at all. Onan's sins of attitude, contempt, disobedience and an over-weening pride were what caused God to smite him. Masturbation was the tool . . . pardon the pun . . . of the act, not the act of sin itself. It would be like stabbing someone to death with a knife, so, anytime we pick up a knife, God would call that a sin.

I'm not defending masturbation per se; I think it is, especially for men, an occasional physical need the body has like going to the bathroom. Sometimes it just builds up and you have to get rid of it, or your body will keep intruding on your life and thoughts until you do. It is one of these things that can be over done or abused, like any other physical function such as eating. (Guilty.) When coupled with porn, which can be addictive, it definitely removes us from the whisperings of the Spirit.

One major purpose of the mortal existence, our first contact with matter, is to learn how to handle it. In almost all things of a physical nature, moderation is the key. Granted there are some absolutes; The Word of Wisdom is full of them. (No coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco or street drugs, for example.) But, in other things, we need to learn when enough is enough; eating, as mentioned above, paying tithing, 10% is fine, thank you, a good and generous fast offering that doesn't bankrupt our family or hamper our legitimate living finances, and so on. Same, I feel, with masturbation.

Masturbation: "As boys and girls reach physical maturity, curiosity in one's body may result in self-stimulation (masturbation)" (Relief Society Courses of Study [197273], p. 203).

The world rationalizes that masturbation is natural and healthy. However, President Spencer W. Kimball states the Lord's view as follows: "Prophets anciently and today condemn masturbation. It induces feelings of guilt and shame. It is detrimental to spirituality. It indicates slavery to the flesh, not that mastery of it and the growth toward godhood which is the object of our mortal life. ... No young man should be called on a mission who is not free from this practice." (The Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 77.)
