There is nothing stopping both of those statements being true at the same time.

Sorry, you have missed my point entirely. I was not concerned with whether or not the doctrine of the Trinity is true or not.

I was pointing out that on Trinitarian matters it is quite possible to find that the Book of Mormon asserts a doctrine close to that of mainstream Christianity (as Brackite states), while Joseph Smith himself asserted a contradictory doctrine in his public teaching and preaching (as you state).

You are both right.
