Oh no! I'm doomed!

God's timetable may (does!) vary from ours. "Generation" can have different meanings.Shulem wrote: ↑Wed Oct 28, 2026 1:04 pmWell, I am not going to make this thread all about you, MG, nor will I say you are on your way to Hell?. I just want to point out that the rug has been pulled out from under you and there is no way you will be left standing in *this* thread! I realize you have given up and am fine with that.
I think we can agree that the last days according to Joseph Smith's reckoning began in the year 1820 when he was visited by Jesus as recorded in his 1832 account. Right? And here we are today, 206 years later, and that same Jesus has yet to show up. Right? Look, there is no possibility that "a" (single) generation can fit within the time frame between 1820-2026! That is NOT a generation! So, what is a generation? A generation is:
The people of the same period, or living at the same time
The original (first) Mormons believed Jesus would be coming sometime during their generation because it was promised that Joseph Smith's followers who believed would be blessed with signs and come to know the signs of the times that would manifest just prior to the Second Coming:Doctrine and Covenants wrote:

Please quote Joseph Smith in order to produce evidence to what you are saying. Would you like me to quote him again to show you are lying?
Noah Webster Dictionary, 1828 wrote:
GENERA'TION, noun The act of begetting; procreation, as of animals.
1. Production; formation; as the generation of sounds or of curves or equations.
2. A single succession in natural descent, as the children of the same parents; hence, an age. Thus we say, the third, the fourth, or the tenth generation Genesis 15:16.
3. The people of the same period, or living at the same time.
O faithless and perverse generation Luke 9:41.
4. Genealogy; a series of children or descendants from the same stock.
This is the book of the generations of Adam. Genesis 5:1.
5. A family; a race.
6. Progeny; offspring.
Joseph Smith wrote:
- It is a principle I esteem to be of the greatest importance to those who are looking for salvation in this generation, or in these, that may be called, ‘‘the latter times.’
- Hebrew writing in general; and that said title-page is not by any means a modern composition, either of mine or of any other man who has lived or does live in this generation
- I declared to you what the Lord had brought forth by the ministering of His holy angels to me for this generation
- O brethren, let us be thankful that it is as well with us as it is, and we are yet alive and peradventure, God hath laid up in store great good for us in this generation
- Behold, he is blessed of the Lord for his constancy and steadfastness in the work of the Lord; wherefore, he shall be blessed in his generation
- Hence it was that so great a responsibility rested upon the generation in which our Savior lived
- Were I going to prophesy, I would say the end would not come in 1844, 5, or 6, or in forty years. There are those of the rising generation who shall not taste death till Christ comes
- But the present generation, if they were going to battle, if they got any assistance from God, they would have to obtain it by faith
- I may safely say that the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation
- If this injunction would lie largely on those to whom it was spoken, how much more those of the present generation
- This generation is as corrupt as the generation of the Jews that crucified Christ
- But there has been a great difficulty in getting anything into the heads of this generation
Generation= "latter times" or by inference to the ancient world "times" at hand.
And it makes sense!
But what else is in the discourse written in the handwriting of Willard Richards that immediately precedes the above statement in D&C 130 that didn't get published in the current version of the D&C? Read it and weep, MG:D&C 130:14,15 wrote:I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following:
Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old [year 1890], thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter.
So, there are those then living of the rising generation that will live to see the Second Coming! What is the "rising generation"? It's the young people of their day:Joseph Smith wrote:I have no doubt of the truth. were I going to prophecy. I would procpesy the end will not come in 1844. or 5— or 6. or 40 years there are those of the rising generation who shall not taste death till Christ come. I was once praying earnestly upon this subject. and a voice said unto me. My son, if thou livest till thou art 85 years of age, thou shalt see the face of the son of man. . . .
D&C 123:11 wrote:And also it is an imperative duty that we owe to all the rising generation, and to all the pure in heart—
Mosiah 26:1 wrote:Now it came to pass that there were many of the rising generation that could not understand the words of king Benjamin, being little children at the time he spake unto his people; and they did not believe the tradition of their fathers.
3 Nephi 1:30 wrote:And thus were the Lamanites afflicted also, and began to decrease as to their faith and righteousness, because of the wickedness of the rising generation.
