For Quasimodo, obviously.
But, also for Madeline. Why? Because I swapped the Cathedral of the Madeleine for Nortre Dame in my drawing.
This one was really fun to do. Initially, it had me stumped. "Quasimodo" is such a specific handle, it's hard to do anything new with it. The character is so well known, plus he's had his integrity insulted recently by Disney. So I didn't know what to draw for a long time.
The idea of using the Cathedral de Madeleine came to me earlier this week and I loved it because that church has such personal significance to me. I think the Cathedral's gargoyles are recognizably different than Notre Dame's, but just drawing Quasimodo next to a different gargoyle wasn't too inventive. I figured I'd just start working and see what happened.
I started drawing one of the Madeleine's towers, intending to place a small figure somewhere. Not the most creative image, but at least I'd have a nice rendering of the Cathedral and I could add Quasimodo's well known shout out in a banner at the bottom to reinforce the reference.
I used some of my own photos for a reference, but the color of the Cathedral looked a bit bland. I found someone's pretty awful HDR photo in an image search. It had been tweaked into a warmer zone, so I made a palette from it with my color picker---that's why the tower in my image looks more like the color of the First Presbyterian on the corner of C street.
It was when I started sketching some scrolls to work out what I wanted the "Sanctuary" banner to look like that I found the perfect solution. I thought about making it look like an illuminated manuscript and then it hit me: Quasimodo is a perfect grotesque for a medieval alphabet! Incorporating his image into an historiated initial made me very happy and satisfied.

Nice tribute

I can't think of any word or combination of words that sufficiently describe your talents, Blixa. Quasi/Madeline's tribute picture has simply left me staring in silent awe.

It was a fun creative challenge. The drawing was the easy part, believe me. The trick is to blow up your drawing so you can sketch an image with big strokes that look highly detailed when resolved to their proper size. Of course it's easy to make mistakes that way and now I'm looking at it I can spot several architectural gaffes.
I can do things drawing digitally that I can't do by hand, but the digital work is helping me better understand shading and working with colour.
Of course I couldn't do any of this without my classless, piece of s@#% drawing tablet!

Beautiful!!
Was just there yesterday, staring up at those gargoyles as I walked up the street, while the bells were ringing calling people to Mass. :-)

What I would like to know is why this thread is not pinned to the top.
