In an analogous but (in every respect) much smaller way, of course, anti-Semitism tends to follow Jews just about everywhere. Mr. Scott Barton, reasoning analogously, might suggest that the Jews bring it on themselves, just as Mr. Scott Barton, again reasoning analogously, might opine that rape victims dress and act provocatively.

Maybe someone should invite Scott Barton to visit us here?
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Holy hell! This stuff is PURE GOLD. He has an wildly inflated vision of himself as a sacrificial martyr to the cause and victim of injustice.

Why? In most cases here because those posting hate Mormonism with a passion and because, for whatever reason, I've become a very visible defender of Mormonism. Therefore, they concentrate their loathing on me. In certain respects, it's analogous to the current situation among Islamists. They hate and despise the West, for reasons good and bad. And, even though most of the injuries done to them under Western imperialism were actually done by the French, the British, Czarist Russia, and several other lesser European powers, the United States is now, by far, the preeminent Western nation. Hence, Islamists tend to focus their hatred and resentment on the United States.

So, I guess--as Mr. Stak points out--DCP is dying for all the sins of past Church leaders. Really, though, the myopia is remarkable. "[F]or whatever reason, I've become a very visible defender of Mormonism." LOL! What a happy accident!

He just flat-out doesn't get it. Here's a hint, though, Dr. P.: there is a reason why Elder Packer tends to be the focus of more ire than the rest of the Brethren. Even if one grants the existence of "anti-Mormonism," and even if one accepts that there are Church critics out there who "hate Mormonism with a passion," the fact remains that some LDS representatives are more disliked than others. Some LDS react to criticism and "anti-Mormonism" with kindness and restraint. Other LDS do not.

Yes, there's a reason why Packer gets the brunt of criticism while Dieter is pretty much liked by everyone.

Buffalo, my dear man, it is you who do not get it. Dr. Peterson's use of the Jews' long historical persecution across centuries from antiquity to the present, the assault on America's freedom-loving culture by tyrannical Imams, and rape victims as comparisons to his own plight at the hands of evil anti-Mormons and critics should in no way influence your sense of how Dr. Peterson views himself. If it does, that is your fault, not his.

Well, I take exception to his use of rape victims as an example. As per the advice of many general authorities, rape victims "had it coming" in many cases - if they didn't fight hard enough or if they turned themselves into "walking pornography." Other than that, I am entirely agreed with Dr. Peterson that is plight is equal to that of the Jews. As we all know, anti-Mormon = anti-Semite.

I find it somewhat comical that Peterson, in virtue of his obsessive sideshow, is now the undisputed, most prolific participant on Lightbox-- a site devoted to photography (about which he seems to know and care very little). And that all of his participation is limited to one topic. Out of 273 comments on the Shumway essay, he has posted 89-- nearly a third (and still counting).

And when the poster "Molly" objects to the distraction, he responds:

Molly, I think you've hit the nail precisely on the head. This has all been extraordinarily bizarre.

On a serious note, I actually do think that anti-Mormonism is akin to anti-Semitism. The question here, in my mind, is whether Shumway's photo essay is anti-Mormon. I say it is not.
