Your reference is to 1842, bcspace's was to 1828.

Do you think Joseph Smith might have been smaller and weaker in 1828 than he was in 1842, some 14 years later?

I grew up in a poor ranching/farming community. We worked with pitch forks, shovels and threw hay bales around with our bare hands.

We came in all shapes and sizes and with different levels of bodily strength, and those shapes, sizes and strengths could change over time, particularly in the shift from boyhood to manhood. That pubescent shift could some at different times for different guys.

For all anyone knows, Joseph Smith could have been a 90 lb weakling when he received the plates.

I didn't start to gain body mass until I was well into my late 20's, damnit

I'll leave it to a physiologist to compare stick pulling (some leg strength needed for sure but probably more of an upper body sports) with running through the forest with metal plates (upper body strength needed for sure but a lot of leg strength needed to, especially if you are missing a bone in one of your legs and have a limp.)

Two Joseph myths to examine closely:

1. Joseph Smith did not have the practical educational skills to have dictated the Book of Mormon
2. Joseph Smith was strong enough to run a distance with very heavy metal plates.

pffft, girly stuff compared to stick pulling.

Leg surgery, refushing even alcohol for a pain killer ... telling ya, bad ass.

From all that girly early years work, no doubt.

Who's to say that some angel did not help him carry it, or if Jesus could turn water into wine, why not lighten the plates, or super man out the already buff Joseph Smith?

I don't have any plate weights but I do have 30lb dumb bells. So I took those out in the yard and ran a few wind sprints. For starters there is no way I could jump or sprint. I was very conscience of the weight and trying to maintain it and not drop it or anything. It was a very controlled jog at best. But after about four wind sprints in my yard (call it 200-300 yds) I was done. I'm 26 - 215 and pretty good shape. More than anything the difference sixty pounds made on my cardio was very striking.
Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07

What a great thread.

I have to wonder, though: why didn't the Lord send an angel with a flaming sword to protect Joseph Smith?

There weren't any available girls around.

Others have conducted the experiment:

It appears that the story is wildly implausible.

Does this story originate from Lucy or Joseph? The reference cited by antishock(?) didn't start with "My young precious son, even the Prophet Joseph Smith, told me about the time..." She obviously wasn't there running alongside for the 6 mile round trip, right? To me it's another Joseph Smith fantasy.

Seems that Lucy believed anything Joseph said.
