Mick was in NYC through most of November, but spent 5 weeks in Rio late November through December of 1984. What are the chances he had a stopover in Mexico City? Maybe a little action he had lined up?

Hmm, actually doesn't make sense for December if he was in Rio - then vacationed in Mustique. Mustique is a private island that you get to by flying to surrounding larger islands - doubt one would fly to Dallas or Houston to get there. Other issue is that Jerry Hall seems to have been hanging out with Mick around that time - where was she on the flight?

Not that the chronology linked above shows every trip these guys went on over the years - but note that no Mexico is mentioned for 85-88.

This story is obviously a lie. If Paul Dunn believed Gene Cook had talked to Mick Jagger, Paul H. would have talked to John Lennon. I don't remember Elder Dunn making that claim.

Would that talk with John be before or after he was murdered?

According to Cook, Jagger had three "children" from three women. London and New York line up, but virginia? wiki says France. Either way, this locks Cook's trip in between 2nd march 1984 when #3 was born and august 1985 when #4 was born. So that's really between July '84 and august '85.

It's called Lying for the Lord. Oakes says that's okay.

I read Elder Oaks to say that Lying for the Lord is not okay. In his September 1993 talk, he said "Lying is sinful, as it has always been, and there is no exempt category for so-called 'lying for the Lord.' Lying is simply outside the range of permitted or condoned conduct by Latter-day Saints—members or leaders."

Is there a circumstance involving or quote of Oaks elsewhere that suggest he condones Lying for the Lord? (I recall that with the Mark Hoffman Salamander letters that Oaks made a denial for the LDS Church that it was not buying those letters, but if memory serves, he recanted with an admission--and apology--within a day or two.)

I don't trust those fat cat GA's. They are not the salt of the earth. Many of them are from corporate greedy America and and were hand choosen by greedy money loving men to take those positions as they rose within the ranks of the business club of the church. God does not call the GA's. They are called of men by men to serve and protect their club.

The GA body is very worldly and patterned after the manner of the world, greed, power, etc.

I'd like to offer you a belated welcome to the board. This thread, I admit, has made for some very fascinating reading, and I appreciate your quest for the truth. It's unfortunate that your thread was closed on MAD, since I'm sure that some of the posters there would also like to learn the real facts about this matter. I suppose the silver lining is that the truth will emerge here, on this board, and that the MADposters can freely visit here to get the facts.

Well, the chronology I posted doesn't put Mick in Mexico or Texas during that period - not that that's conclusive, but obviously wouldn't have been a very noteworthy jaunt.

I have been reading over the comments section at Mormanity. There is a wealth of information there for anyone who's interested (scroll down to the bottom for the most recent comments, including those of Troy Cook):

Easily? And how to you suggest then he would do this? With what information available at that time? And with what extra time? Lord knows (as do I), that GRC had but a few hours with his own family in a typical week. GRC’s fixation was on scripture and little else. If, as you suggest, he was so immersed in researching Jagger, I think the family would have noticed. It’s very likely he would have asked me for some of that information, but did not.

Personally, I believe Troy Cook. I doubt that Elder Cook would have asked his kids for info---especially given the argument in the talk that such music is of the devil, and should be avoided. We all know that the Church prefers to sweep uncomfortable subjects under the rug, and I see no reason why habit should be any different in this case.

What this *does* mean, though, is that either Elder Cook himself perused a copy of Rolling Stone--as Dr. Robbers suggested; or, that someone at the COB was assigned to help Cook fabricate this bogus, faith-promoting talk. I could be wrong, but this may constitute very important circumstantial evidence that the rank-and-file are recruited to help the Brethren peddle falsehoods.

If it was a rock magazine, "creem" had an article about him in 1984. A cover story from Life, an article in People which mentions his wife also, and a Playboy interview, also a possibility we can't discount.

It's a matter of which of these would mention the basic facts Cook discussed. Well even if those magazine turn up empty, as the apologists have often said regarding Book of Mormon archeology, "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence" -- still no reason to discard the theory too quickly.

As Doctor Scratch noted, the theological part of this is an obvious fabrication. I realized it actually traces back to Alma and Korihor for the basic structure, the essential points about "man prospering according to genius", "nothing matters, do what you want" and this preaching has the same negative effect on society as Jager's and at the end he's struck dumb by Alma. Cook's text also has an excerpt from 1 Nephi 8, the "if there is no law, ye shall say there is no sin..." -- I'm sure Jagger just offered up the negation of that whole Nephite sermon nearly exactly as it appears in the Book of Mormon.

A good point. I seem to recall a few posters on MAD saying that they looked at Internet pornography in the name of research. It stands to reason that some of the General Authorities have done the same thing. They have to protect the Saints, and thus they need to know what they're dealing with.

This also provides evidence in favor of our ongoing theory concerning the dearth of good Mormon art. Even this faith-promoting fabrication is sorely lacking in narrative and thematic originality. The whole thing has been lifted straight out of one of the most familiar stories in the Book of Mormon.
