Personally, I think the time is getting closer.
Joseph Smith thought the same thing and prophesied how the day of retribution was close at hand while dedicating the Kirtland Temple as recorded in the MESSENGER AND ADVOCATE:
Joseph Smith, 1836 wrote:President J. Smith jr. then addressed the congregation in a manner calculated to instruct the understanding, rather than please the ear, and at or about the close of his remarks, he prophesied to all, that inasmuch as they would uphold these men in their several stations, alluding to the different quorums in the church, the Lord would bless them; yea, in the name of Christ, the blessings of Heaven shall be yours. And when the Lord’s annointed go forth to proclaim the word, bearing testimony to this generation, if they receive it, they shall be blessed, but if not, the judgments of God will follow close upon them, until that city or that house, that rejects them, shall be left desolate.
Smith's prophetic threats of judgements upon those who rejected Mormonism went unfulfilled.

Joseph Smith's letter to the leaders of the Church

Post by Shulem »

Handwriting of Joseph Smith, Kirtland, August 18, 1833
Joseph Smith's Handwriting wrote:
  • O thou disposer of all Events, thou dispencer of all good! in the name of Jesus Christ I ask thee to inspire my heart indiht [indite] my thaughts guide my peen [pen]
  • Dear Brotheren we must wait patiently until the Lord come
  • Judgement might be upon them and thus the testimony of the Kingdom must go unto all and there are many ways that God designs to bring about his ritious purposees and in the day of Judgement he designs to make us the Judges of the whole world generation in which we live
  • god has communicated to m[e] by the gift of the holy ghost

Joseph Smith prophesied in the name of Jesus Christ and by the power of the Holy Ghost that the day of judgement would come in the generation in which he lived.

Orson Pratt was one of among many that have gone against the grain of what Jesus said in the New Testament:
Apostle Pratt was mirroring the teachings of Jesus and the prophet Joseph Smith and was undoubtedly aware of every communication made by President Smith to the leaders of the Church.
Orson Pratt, A Interesting Account of Several Remarkable Visions, and of the Late Discovery of Ancient American Records, 1840 wrote: These also contain the gospel in great plainness, and instructions of infinite importance to the saints. They also unfold the great events that await this generation; the terrible judgments to be poured forth upon the wicked, and the blessings and glories to be given to the righteous. We believe that God will continue to give revelations by visions, by the ministry of angels, and by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, until the saints are guided unto all truth, that is, until they come in possession of all the truth there is in existence, and are made perfect in knowledge.

PS. That generation in which those things took place was 186 years ago. Had you lived in Pratt's generation you might have faced church discipline for your apostate comment.

Eighty-five years old

Post by Shulem »

I wish to reiterate how Joseph Smith was very much gung ho about the Second Coming early in his ministry and the whole Church believed it was just around the corner and would occur during their generation or that some would live to see the Day of the Lord. However, late in his ministry he seems to have eased off a bit and shifted as he began to approach midlife there was less enthusiasm on his part. I think the failure of not building the Missouri temple and the failure to complete the Nauvoo House weighed heavily on his psyche and he truly began to doubt that the Second Coming would happen in his lifetime. The whole thing was a gamble on his part and I think he was quite concerned that his losses would catch up with him. But he gave himself to the age of 85 to make good on the prophecy or go bust. Smith knew that his religion was a gamble.

I sincerely think that my observations on this matter are correct.

I don't think any of the succeeding prophets have been any different either. They all hint that something is coming soon. Hey, we were called "Saturday's Warriors." Remember that? And oh it was only about two or so minutes to midnight before Jesus comes back here. Even Oaks now is hinting that Jesus is right around the corner. It reminds me very much of the UFO phenomena. Oh disclosure is very, very, very, very, very, no really! VERY soon, so pay attention! It's only 42 more daysl After another 100 whiz by, oh, it's only a few more weeks! etc.

Philo-baby! :D

Thank you for chiming in and yes, I do remember the whole Saturday Warriors thingy -- we are the same age. It seems that each generation of youth is more valiant then the preceding one. It's nothing short of patronizing and brainwashing the current youth and elevating them to levels that are simply unsustainable because kids today really are no better than they were 100 years ago.

Here is a list of statements made by LDS prophets concerning the Second Coming, please read them:
Brigham Young wrote:The time is soon at hand that we shall have to flee whithersoever the Lord will, for safety... The signs of the coming of the Son of Man are already commenced... and I testify that the coming of the Son of Man is nigh, even at your doors.
John Taylor wrote:The Lord has commenced his work for the last time, and whereon Jesus will make his appearance the second time, when he comes to gather and save the House of Israel... The day is fast approaching when these events will take place.
Wilford Woodruff wrote:The day is at the door, and the events foretold in the scriptures are beginning to be fulfilled. Great judgments are coming upon the earth, and the Son of Man will soon appear in the clouds of heaven.
Lorenzo Snow wrote:The time is short; the day of the Lord is near, and we should be diligent in preparing the way for His coming, for the great day of the Lord will overtake the world unawares unless they repent.
Joseph F. Smith wrote:We are living in the last days, in the dispensation of the fulness of times... The signs of the times are all around us, indicating that the coming of the Lord is nigh at hand.
Heber J. Grant, General Conference, April 1936 wrote:The day of the coming of the Lord is near. I do not know when... I sincerely believe it will come in the very day when some of us who are here today will be living upon the earth. That day is close at hand.
George Albert Smith wrote:We are living in the evening of the world's history, in the days just preceding the second coming of our Heavenly Father’s Son. We must be prepared, for the day of His coming is draweth near.
David O. McKay wrote:The signs foretold by the prophets are being fulfilled rapidly. The hour is coming, and is nearer than when we first believed, when the Savior shall reign personally upon the earth.
Joseph Fielding Smith wrote:I tell you that the day of the Lord is at hand. It is nigh, even at the doors. The signs are being fulfilled in every nation, and the time for His coming cannot be far distant.
Harold B. Lee wrote:We are living in that day when the signs of the times are being manifested... We must stand in holy places and be not moved, for the coming of the Lord is draweth nigh.
Spencer W. Kimball wrote:The day of the Lord's coming is approaching rapidly. The scriptures warn us that as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be at the coming of the Son of Man. We must prepare without delay.
Ezra Taft Benson wrote:In the modern revelation the Lord declared, 'The coming of the Lord draweth nigh'... We are living in the final hours before that glorious event. The great and dreadful day of the Lord is at hand.
Howard W. Hunter wrote:The world is moving swiftly toward the culmination of all things prophesied by holy men of old. As the return of our Redeemer draws near, let us live so that we will be worthy to receive Him.
Gordon B. Hinckley wrote:The vision of Joel is being fulfilled... We are living in the dispensation of the fulness of times. The day of the Lord’s return is getting closer, and the work must roll forth until it fills the whole earth.
Thomas S. Monson wrote:These are the latter days. The signs of the Savior's return are evident all around us. We must be watchful, prayerful, and prepared so that we may be ready when that great day arrives.
Russell M. Nelson wrote:Our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, will perform some of His mightiest works between now and when He comes again... Time is running out. The Savior is coming, and He will come sooner than we think.
Dallin H. Oaks wrote:We need to make spiritual preparation for the events prophesied at the time of the Second Coming... What if the day of His coming were tomorrow? If we knew that we would meet the Lord tomorrow—through our premature death or through His unexpected coming—what would we do today?... If our lamps of preparation are drawn down, let us start immediately to replenish them.

May God help the poor Latter-day Saints wake up and realize their religion is a spoof.

We are in the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. Is it ten years? A hundred years? Five hundred years? We don't know how long this dispensation will go on. God's measurement of time 'does not compute ' to us.

A generation is a space/unit/period of time. A Dispensation is a period of time known only to God. God the Father is the ONLY one (Jesus, as alluded to earlier, my also know at this point), who knows when...within the dispensational time period...when Christ will return.

As you know, in the case of 'the ancients', some scholars have determined that the use of the word 'generation' had different meanings during that time period.

I don't think I would hang my hat on the word "generation"... especially when it can be used/interpreted multiple ways.

If you are intent on a certain exegetical framework in your interpretive stance on this Shulem, more power to you. If it works for you as you have created your own personal narrative of who Christ is/was...no one is stopping you.

Isn't agency and freedom to believe/do what you want wonderful? It results in a world of many choices. Some pro faith and others anti faith.

Regards,
MG

Cover your eyes! Incoming!

Corrupt and lying Mormon apologists improperly convert the word "generation" into something it is not as if it represents a dispensation or an era of time that can last indefinitely rather than the normal lifespan of a human being. The word dispensation does not compliment that interpretation and has nothing to do with duration or length of time. It's a Mormon cheap shot in trying to save a failed prophecy! MG is grasping a long straw and is out of air!

Examine the prophetic Patriarchal Blessing uttered by the Church Patriarch (prophet, seer and revelator), given to the President of the Church in 1834, and recorded in the handwriting of the Assistance President of the Church (Second-in-command), Oliver Cowdery:

(This is as high as it gets in Mormonism)
Joseph Smith Sr. wrote:
  • Joseph, my son, I lay my hands upon thy head in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ
  • Therefore, my son, I know for a surety that these things will be fulfilled, and I confirm upon thee all these blessings
  • Thou shalt be gathered to Zion and in the goodly land thou shalt enjoy thine inheritance; thy children and thy children’s children to the latest generation
  • Thou shalt stand upon the earth when it shall reel to and fro as a drunken man, and be removed out of its place: thou shalt stand when the mighty judgments go forth to the destruction of the wicked: thou shalt stand on mount Zion when the tribes of Jacob come shouting from the north, and with thy brethren, the sons of Ephraim, crown them in the name of Jesus Christ: Thou shalt see thy Redeemer Come in the clouds of heaven, and with the just receive the hallowed throng with shouts of hallalujahs, praise the Lord. Amen

Or in other words, Joseph will "stand" (remain alive) to see all those things!

NO! It can only be interpreted one way by using the Dictionary and not by lying apologetic Mormons who attempt to wiggle out of anything and everything while telling lies!

YOU are a liar, MG.

That makes the devil your father.

Repent!
