No. I've never been LDS. If you think my having never been LDS negates my ability to read/observe what constitutes a cross section of a sub-culture of society, and to offer an objective opinion or pose a question to a primarily LDS related board after many several years of also being friends with LDS and encountering them on boards like this for 10 years, I can't help you.

You're right, you couldn't help me, even if you met me then, when I was having this monumental daily struggles with my ex wife. Being a brilliant woman much smarter than I ever will be, It took me years to free her from the grasp of CULT ( I am not ashamed to use the epithet).
Sorry but encountering them on these boards is not equal to live that daily horror.

Read your original post again, we (at least me) don't engage this board because of any obligation, I'll tell you what; it became part of my culture, even though it pisses the hell out of my wife. I do this of my free time, nobody pushes me to be here.
I'll give you a hint though, I am attracted to understand, comprehend, how seemingly smart people fall for this fallacy, when it is so obvious to figure out.

I for one am very thankful that people like Beastie post. I don't agree with her on everything but she is extremly well read and has a huge amount of experience dealing with issues that I've struggled with. It's been a lot more effective than my psychologist visits and a lot more affordable. Yes, I am crazy and have been for the past 15 years. Even though I'm very much a loner, Mormonism is something I needed a lot of help to deal with.

So to everyone, thanks for sharing.

I have felt the same way many times in the past. I needed, and received, a lot of help dealing with it myself, so I'm very glad to know that I, and others, occasionally really do help others (amid the bickering ;)

Have you come any closer to doing so? What are your findings thusfar? What has been the common link that you've found, if any, that helps you understand the foundational workings/thinking of seemingly smart believers?
