You know what would've been nice? The Mormon church building a homeless shelter staffed with counselors and medical assistants, and ministering to the poor and destitute.

That would've been nice. Give them bread. Give them shelter. Pay attention to them. Change their lives. Pretty sure Nordstrom isn't doing to do the trick.

Lord knows they have enough homeless downtown, anyway...

I am not sure that I would like to assert that there is a 'moral' difference between owning shares in companies that may conduct retail enterprises and managing a mall directly.

On the other hand, the idea of the Prophet and Apostles being involved in deciding what mix of fast-food chains to allow into their mall, or whether Victoria's Secret should be included is a kind of reductio ad absurdum of the proposition that a church supposedly founded by Jesus could, consistent with his teachings, be immensely wealthy and attempt to make even more money by selling people lots of stuff.

I mean, the mouthpiece of God on earth spoke, and he said "1, 2, 3 - let's go shopping!". No ... cannot compute ...

Not to mention the posters they use to advertise it, an LDS woman who wore a backless dress like the woman on the poster would most certainly be regarded as walking porn.

I think a backless dress is the most alluring.

Most of us have known for a long time now that missions aren't to find new tithe payers. The mission is to cement the cult into the mind of the missionary by placing them away from home at a tender age and cut off all contact from friends and family. Their lives are controlled and the Cult is drilled into their heads daily. This is an effective means of bringing back a lifetime paying member.

I think that you need to give it a rest. Take a step outside your own world and see just what you wrote. It sounds a little foolish. Both of my daughters have served missions and I see no cultish behavior among them.

The thing I think is important, is disclosure. If I'm donating funds I want to know how they are used.

Tithing funds are used for the benefit of the LDS church. And so far, I see no problem. The IRS has complete access to the financial statements. They can also be audited.

Now madeleine, we know that the vatican is a rather secretive onclave. We have no idea what is going on in the vatican bank or in the vatican itself. Can the IRS look at the vatican books? I don't think so. It is a state within itself.
