Doctor Scratch wrote:Wow.... These are astonishing. Surreal on so many levels. Did you watch the one where they are briefed on (of all things) pirates? The presenter shows them a clip from Pirates of the Caribbean. It's also just bizarre to see Elder Oaks, circa 2008, per the video, saying "What are credit dee-fault swaps? What are those?" And the Chelsea Manning video is hilarious. We've been assured on a number of occasions by the Mopologists that they aren't "homophobic," though this video shows pretty conclusively how rampant the fear is concerning the "homosexual agenda."

Anyone know who the presenter is on the economic videos? The Asian looking fella is who I mean. Thanks

Is this him?..

Wonder if this leak will be the start of airport-type full body scanners for those employees exiting the Church Office Building? I imagine things went to a state of DEFCON 2 today.

Maybe the lack of understanding of cyber security threats by the 12 and focus of the gay agenda will eventually get the Holy grails of leaks. Otherwise I just see a bunch of old men trying to be informed on new world problems and not having a fsking idea what they are being told.

I think the corporate side of the Church is run and controlled pretty tight, like unto a dish. Even if it was a circle jerk video I'm pretty sure most TBMs would be meh about it.

I think more than anything this is their Wizard of Oz moment. There's no magic, no god, nothing but some uninspired turds crapping out nonsense during a corporate meeting.

This is my impression of the whole thing. Of course, anyone happily drinking the sacramental Koolaid will find a way to excuse what they are seeing, but, make no mistake, this material is highly emetic. I don't see much that puts the Brethren in a very favorable light. I see nothing that looks inspiring or inspired. The preoccupation, nay obsession, with "teh gayz" is bizarre in the extreme. And, the way these speakers lick the boots of their apostolic overlords sends vomit to the roof of my mouth instantaneously. I could have hardly imagine anything more likely to keep me far away from the LDS Church than this otherwordly display of self-congratulations, obsequiousness, and sanctimony.

I think these videos will be more damaging over time. KSL did a quick "Move along. Nothing to see here" and the blurb readers are satisfied. But, as the Larry King GBH interview has proven, it adds to the disaffection of the doubter making it harder to accept the truth claims once a person really starts to research the church.

The Gordon Smith interview will likely be discussed in political forums anytime a Mormon is running for office outside of the Mountain west.

And their obsession with homosexuality will only amplify those troubled with the church's treatment of the LGBT community.

I'm disappointed you didn't say frakking.

I don't know that this is what I am experiencing in watching the first video in the list: CHD reorg.

Of course, I must say, this is the first one I've had time look at and it's the first one in the list. At the 33 minute mark Elder Jensen begins his remarks. In my estimation he comes across as a very humble/sincere and somewhat humorous man. His simple and straightforward way in describing receiving inspiration, etc., is refreshing and down to earth. I think that any "magic" or any "god" that inspires these brethren is done 'on the fly' as they go about doing the work that they believe to be of God. In listening to Elder Jensen it is fairly obvious that he believes in the work that he and the history department are doing. He's not just a 'corporate hack' out to hoodwink the crowd or conduct a pep rally. Although I guess it's possible for someone that is somewhat jaded to think so.

I've read the Trib. article and a number of the comments. I've read other descriptions from other news outlets. I've read comments. Months ago many here were looking at The Late War as being the beginning of the end of the world as we know it in Mormonism. Same thing seems to be going on now. Using words such as "devastating". I think that is only true among a small select group that is already in a position where they find themselves either angry or disgruntled so they are overly sensitive to anything that seems to be controversial.

To think that the leadership of the church actually investigates and then discusses issues that are important to them is an 'oh, really'...they do that?...umm...yeah, sort of OBVIOUS question/answer. Of course they sit around and discuss and educate themselves concerning the trends of the day and how they may impact the goals/objectives/mission of the church.

It's a no brainer, isn't it?

I'd be awfully surprised if any legal issues or other liability/prosecutorial outcomes arise as a result of these hacked videos.

Much ado about very little. There are some angry folks out there that want to 'expose' the church, aren't there?

What an interesting day we live in.

Regards,
MG

Devastating? No. Revealing? Yes.

To be fair to the leadership in the videos, we enjoy the benefit of years of knowledge and reporting on the subjects being discussed so it's difficult to judge how naïve they should be considered compared to samples of contemporaries in similar positions of power and authority. But even with that recognition, the questions they ask and the behavior they exhibit over what draws their concerns is not going to be as comfortable to many younger people with an internet connection than they might be to, say, a retiree who listens to KSL all day.

And the Gordon Smith video is damning if it never actually turns out to be "devastating".
