Do my posts look more professiona when I avoid smilies and instead use [/rant] or [/sacrasm] instead?
The problem with writing in message boards is that we are not writing an essay--at least not usually. I agree that smilies are inappropriate there. However, in message boards we are often dialoging which is something that often includes facial or tonal clues for meaning.
Shakespeare didn't use smilies, but Shakespeare generally didn't write replies to other playwrights. Furthermore, the lengths of his plays were such that meaning was often able to be more clearly deduced. Our short replies in a message board make this much more difficult.
And of course, Shakespeare was better than we are--even if it turns out that someone else may have written many of those plays (the Earl of whatchyamacallit).

That's General Leo. He could be my friend if he weren't my enemy.

Ok? Why??
Because the entire board is not united.
Is there someone that doesn't want them? Other than Shades, that is?
Is Blixa in the anti-Smilies crowd?
