1. Fanny was a teenager, living with a charismatic persuasive man.
2. The sealing keys had NOT been restored. Calling this a marriage is incorrect, both by the law of the land and by the law of the church. This relationship was adultery, pure and simple, perpetuated by a man who went to great lengths to keep the relationship secret.
And yet, Eliza Snow considered Joseph and Fanny to be sealed as Joseph first wife. She also had no problem.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world. Joseph Smith We are “to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all…” Joseph Smith

Regardless of Liza Snow's belief. FACT - Joseph's first wife did not approve; FACT - the sealing keys were not yet restored; and FACT - Fanny does not appear on FamilySearch as a sealed wife to Joseph Smith.
One would have to ignore every single piece of documentary and historical evidence to believe that Joseph was doing something other than just playing hide the sausage with Fanny.

Mormonism is a religion that expects members to keep the commandments of God. There exactly and profoundly is the crux of the matter Why Me, It's why people are leaving in droves. Joseph appears to have felt he was above the fundamental law of God in terms of what was effectively adultery however you want to wrap it up.

If you say so. I think that it is much more difficult to be an active Mormon today than it was 10 years ago. And certainly more difficult than 40 years ago when Mormon values were still mainstream. Pepple can be leaving so that they experience more 'freedom' in moral choices. But are they actually 'free'?
I don't think that Joseph was above it all. Just the opposite. He was constantly under the spotlight and often came up for criticism from members. Some left because they expected something different than what he was. And he often mentioned that he was not perfect nor righteous.

I think that maybe linked to the increase in availability of facts...

There is nothing wrong with the facts. It is how the facts are presented that is the problem.

I think maybe some of the "leaving" is the church's decision to not fund the stuff that kept people involved... the sports activities are gone, most of the youth activities are gone, the women's activities are gone... anything other than Sunday meetings are all gone.
Makes me wonder if the corporate greed strangled that which kept many members engaged.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Exactly. People are going to be totally cool with Joseph Smith boinking teenagers and other men's wives when they find out an angel with a flaming sword made him do it.

You better talk to fair and farms then. They are more responsible then anyone on the internet for members realizing the church is not true. They are the ones where members find out from friendly sources that yes Joseph did have wives that were married to other men, and he did have sex with many of them. It's where we find out about many of the issues that show the church is not true. Too many apologists just don't realize their apologetics are not very good, and many members can see that. You may not understand this, but us active members tend not to trust sources like the tanners. If we read something from them, we need to confirm it from friendly sources
