Oh my goodness; interacting with Dr. Cam is just fruitless.

It wasn't an "open secret." He came out to his friends in the MHA community before 1988, to which I was a witness. I was involved in MHA gatherings whilst Dr. Peterson was still a babe in arms.

Around 1988, people were talking about the fact the Dr. Quinn was gay, just as we talk about Judge Vaughn Walker being gay. It is a fact of public discourse about somebody's nature after they have chosen to reveal it to the world.

Scratch's story is just maliciously false, and he has on more than one occasion stated that he thinks I'm lying about my first-hand account of Mike's coming out party, when it was very well known among Mormon historians of Mike's vintage (he's older than DCP).

Dr. Quinn has had plenty of opportunity to complain about the way his separation from BYU was handled; he has talked about it and has said nothing but the most gracious things.

Dr. Peterson didn't have anything to do with Quinn's employment at BYU. Quinn actually resigned in the wake of a series of conflicts with the Brethren on the issue of academic freedom.

Yes, Scratch, you've come right up against the line on numerous occasions during your five-year crusade against me, but you're smart enough to scurry quickly away from this one.

Where have I ever said that you had anything to do with his resignation?

That said, DCP most definitely *did* discuss Quinn's sexuality with his "circle"---people who, I think it's fair to say, include "BYU colleagues."

We've been over this a hundred times. It came up on a small handful of occasions; I don't think I was ever the one who mentioned it first, and it wasn't a topic of prolonged discussion. But most everybody in "Mormon studies," believers and unbelievers alike, knew about Quinn's homosexuality before his official coming out.

You mentioned it multiple times on FAIR/MAD/MDD. (Actually, you might not have mentioned it on MDD, seeing as how this is that messageboard's latest incarnation.) Often, you mentioned it as a means of suggesting to gullible TBMs that sin in that regard was the key reason for his excommunication.

Furthermore, my sense of the "wrongness" in all of this lies in the attempts by Dr. Peterson to negatively affect Quinn's reputation, such as by implying that Quinn was excommunicated for sexual sin, rather than his historical writings. Quinn has maintained all along that the key reason he ran afoul of the Church was because of his work as a historian. The apologists--including DCP--have tried to imply to suggest otherwise. I think that this is extraordinarily nasty and unethical within an LDS context. It's impossible to view this sort of thing as anything other than what it is---i.e., an attempt to ruin Quinn's reputation in LDS circles.

We've been over this ad nauseam many times before. I'm not going down the rabbit hole with you again.

But you would be very prudent to keep your distance in the future from flat libel.

If you think I've libeled you, then go ahead and phone up your attorney, Dr. Peterson. This will be what--the 8th? 9th time that you've made such a threat against me?

Here's a question for you, though: if you sued me, would it be possible to subpoena various documents and information that you and the other apologists have been trying to keep secret all these years? Furthermore, what kind of PR impact would this have? What would the headlines say? "BYU Prof. and Noted Mormon Apologist Sues Internet Critic"?

You don't quite have your facts straight. For one thing, my opinion on this whole matter has nothing whatsoever to do with any "informants." My opinion was formed entirely on the basis of things that were said openly on the boards. As for sources, there are tons. This is a subject that has been re-hashed, like, a million times, and it seems clear at this point that the basic truth of the matter has gotten warped somewhat.

...though, as I said, this has been discussed so many times that you'll be able to find threads in abundance. for what it's worth, I don't think that DCP has been nearly as vicious towards Quinn as, say, Bill Hamblin or Louis Midgley.

The Quinn cheerleaders are again at it on this thread. I am still waiting to hear from Quinn about it all. I would assume that he would agree with Dan. I think that he should come onto the board and give his take on it since so many people are speaking for him.
