The Number 1 Reason U.S. Bishops Are Ex'ed?

Post by _Mister Scratch »

Over on FAIR, Her Amun has begun a thread discussing the very high number of google searches for both "porn" and "Jesus" in SLC. To my mind, this dovetails perfectly with a number of LDS cultural beliefs, practices, and attitudes, but what do you suppose the FAIRmods think of it? Do you suppose that they are tolerant of this sort of discussion? Or do you suppose that (as is the reality) that they are looking to squash observations like Tarski's, who sees this behavior as stemming from LDS sexual repression?

In any case, a very interesting sidenote was provided by DaddyMO (a.k.a. Dadof7):

[note: the first portion is him questioning the validity of the google stats.]
Now let's ask the mathematician how reliable these types of statistics are in correltating actual behavior...

Which is not to say that the Mormons don't have a problem with pornography. According to a visiting 70 at our last Stake leadership meeting, the most frequent cause for excommunication of a Bishop outside North America is misappropriation of funds. The most frequent inside is Chastity violations...

To me, this is a remarkable admission from a GA. It is unclear whether this is a commentary on cultural mores, or the way the leadership in SLC regards the different factions of its membership, or what, but it is most intriguing that North American bishops would be ex'ed primarily for this reason.

In any case, I highly recommend the FAIR thread for its bizarro-world analysis of human sexuality. Enjoy!

Xed for taking money or Xed for having sex? That sounds like a perennial Republican and Democrat problem.

This could also be a function of who's holding the money. In the US, the bishop isn't the one counting the money or taking it to the bank, that is done by the clerks and councilors. Perhaps it is a different case in other areas of the world.

Regarding the sex stuff, people are people and some are going to mess up when thrown together into emotional situations. I remember a couple of cases of bishops and the RS presidents hooking up. We also had our stake patriarch ex'd for boinking his scribe. That one sent shock waves through the stake.

When I was on my mission, one of the stake presidents ran the distribution center for the church. He was excommunicated for embezzling money and having a longstanding affair with his secretary. One of his sons was on a mission at the time, and the SP insisted that his son come home, and the entire family left the church.

As kids we kind of idolized church leaders, didn't we? I never had a problem with their being imperfect, flawed human beings. What bothers me is the kind of cult of personality that the church encourages towards its leaders. The Joseph Smith/GBH celebrations last year seemed like they could have been designed in Pyongyang, not Salt Lake City.

Kinsey's studies indicated that people have sex -- a LOT of sex.

The Mormon leaders don't build cheap edifices to their God out of respect. From what I remember of their offices in the COB and Admin building, their offices are nicely furnished.

Mote? Beam?

It sounds like the leaders might be held to a different standard...but I hope that's not being too critical of Mormonism.

An addendum to my initial post: MorningStar has been going on and on about how the high number of searches for "porn" are likely the result of "a few perverts." I.e., she is claiming the the whoppingly high numbers are all the doing of just a few incredibly horny chaps. Later, she claims that merely "looking for porn on google" isn't a sign that one is actually looking for pornographic images, but rather could be the result of "doing research." She stated that she herself has done a google search for porn, in order to banish it permanently from her computer.

LOL!

Isn't that like an alcoholic walking into bar after bar in order to familiarize himself with all the places he's supposed to avoid?
"Finally, for your rather strange idea that miracles are somehow linked to the amount of gay sexual gratification that is taking place would require that primitive Christianity was launched by gay sex, would it not?"

Heh. Well, to be fair, she did say that she'd typed in something like, "how to stop porn," or something of that nature. ; )
