Similarities between FLDS and LDS

It was interesting to hear this girls testimony in the Warren Jeffs case. When asked if she wanted to get married and the girl said, "No, she did not." They asked if she had prayed about it.

When asked if you believe in the LDS church, the parents basically make you pray about it until you do. If the parents aren't that heavy handed, the bishops and stake presidents encourage them to be so. It's a real focus.

When asked how much power Warren Jeffs had one girl stated, "If he told a member to jump off a bridge, he would do it."

It makes me think of the oaths to sacrifice everything you have or ever will have to the LDS church.

When they asked the girl why she didn't run away, the obvious response was where would she go?

It makes me think of my own life and realizing how important family is and how much I'd hate to lose them, even if they have been bamboozled by a cult.

One lady pointed out that she didn't believe that polygamous unions were consensual even if the women were 40 years old because they had been brought up to believe this their entire life, not to mention they would have nowhere to go. I agree but in the same respect, perhaps Warren Jeffs is just a product of his environment as well. I suppose you could argue that hen pecked sissy men who wouldn't dare play sports are a product of the power lesbian environment from which they were molded.

The tactics seem so similar. Why does everyone want to exercise mind control on each other?

I wonder if some of it can be attributed to motives and some of it to the cultures in which we're raised.

I think that some people seem to have a grand plan that they are pursuing and have a need to control others to achieve their plan. I think some are simply perpetuating the culture they were brought up in.

He's a product of a culture that assumes an entitlement from God to give orders and direct the lives of others. Those beliefs were started by Joseph, Brigham and early Church leaders. Although many of the notions about entitlement have been modified to exclude polygamous rights inside CoJCoLDS, there are still many leaders who drive the Church with a vision that requires obedience.

I often wondered if I would be able to do whatever the leaders asked of me, ala Nephi offing Laban for his property.

I find it very funny that they can track you down anywhere at anytime

Don't you???????

I am truly truly afraid.....but I refuse to SHUT UP and SING........

FLDS mimicks LDS when B Young and J Taylor were in charge. This continued through W Woodruff's administration until the manifesto. J Smith attempted to hide the "polygamy" dimension, otherwise the LDS of his time were very similar to present-day FLDS.

If I recall correctly, in addition to polygamy, the FLDS believe in blood-atonement and Adam is God, however I might be confusing this one with other polygamist offshoots of Joseph Smith's church.

Y'know Ajax, it's a fairly trivial exercise to point out "similarities" between any two groups. It is equally easy to point out differences between them. If you want the comparisons to be in any way useful, you need to come up with some kind of robust methodology for weighing up similarities and differences and determining how they are significant.

Note, please, that the "similarities" you have described here are not actual similarities between the two groups, but rather similarities in your perception.

You need to control for bias as well.

This would go nowhere, Pahoran, if you would just let it drop. You call exmormons bigots because exmormons call the Church a cult. Some exmormons call you brainless sheeple because you accept Joseph as a necromancer.

So much for taking the higher ground.

YourMendacity,

you lied, as you habitually do:

Neither I nor any Latter-day Saint of my acquaintance--indirect or otherwise--accepts Joseph as a necromancer.

As you perfectly well know.

The reality is that some exmormons call us "brainless sheeple" because they are small-minded bigots.

And for no other reason.

It's less a matter of taking it as it is of being in sole and undisputed possession of it.

If a man calls you a Hutt, ignore him. If a second man calls you a Hutt, begin to wonder. If a third calls you a Hutt, buy a drool bucket and start stockpiling spice.

For a man who professes to be a member of Christ's Church, you really are a hateful little bastard, aren't you?

In all seriousness, just because you don't like the fact that your church is by definition a cult and displays many scary cult-like characteristics doesn't mean it isn't a cult.

Is it the worst of the cults? Probably not. But it definetely makes it on my Top 10 list.

Alternatively, look into it and discover that they are passing around the same handful of pointless labels.

For a man who professes to be a member of Christ's Church, you really are a hateful little bastard, aren't you?

Hey--I'm not the one promoting hatred by appeal to meaningless four-letter pejoratives.

In all seriousness, just because you don't like the fact that your church is by definition a cult and displays many scary cult-like characteristics doesn't mean it isn't a cult.

In all seriousness, just because you and a handful of your fellow-bigots resort to all manner of dishonest tactics to try to pin the "cult" label upon the Church of Jesus Christ doesn't mean it's a "cult."

Whatever that might mean.

Is it the worst of the cults? Probably not. But it definetely makes it on my Top 10 list.

Which tells us nothing at all about the Church, and as much as I would ever want to know about you.

Pahoran
