Book of Mormon: Coming to America

What are the odds that a group could sail from the Old World (Eurasia) to the New World (Americas)?
I actually find it highly likely that someone sailed here in the BCs (more specifically the Israelite Period from 1000 BC to 500 BC). I just find it highly unlikely it was an Israelite group.
There were already some excellent maritime civilizations in the Ancient World. The Phoenicians (and their successors in Carthage), the Minoans, and the Greeks just to focus on the Mediterrean were excellent seamen. The Phoenicians in particular were sailing all over the place, including around Africa. I find it highly likely that a storm on the Western shore of Africa could blow a trading ship all the way to Brazil. There may never be any colonization, but a ship sailing there, maybe staying and blending into the population, possible.
But would it be the Israelites? The Israelites were traditionally a Desert tribe, and only did anything on the water once David and Solomon were in power. But could a single Israelite family sail all the way from the Arabian Peninsula to America, particularly a group with no real history of shipbuilding or sailing? Then creating a whole civilization once they reached their destination?
Thoughts?

Yeah, I agree.
The lame assed Book of Mormon movie really brings this to light.
How about Scurvy?
Also, Nibley claims there were others here before Lehi.. Huh, so ~15 sickly almost starved people make land on the americas and are able with in a few short years able to concur and then divide an established society? AND no record of this in the most correct book?
Their excuse is there was not room to put that, even though according to the Book of Mormon text the place was littered with gold, and as for no space, they sure had room for Nephi/Joe to repeat parts of the Bible, word for friggin word!...
Once the mo'pologist has painted themselves into a corner with their bucket of illogical paint, they will cue the Janice Kapp Perry song, "With God, nothing is impossible".

I think it is possible, but very unlikely. Of course, a voyage such as described in Ether is pure fantasy. My arguments against the Book of Mormon historicity aren't based on the idea that a overseas voyage would be impossible, but that there is no evidence that the civilization described in the Book of Mormon existed ANYWHERE in the New World during the specified time period, much less Mesoamerica.

The situations provided by Con Tiki, besides the wishful thinking, is a BIG stretch to the situation proposed by the Book of Mormon.
Remember Jason Bored, just because somethiong could be possible does not make it probable.

Remember though, he and others have been told that this fantastic voyage did occur! By the shhpecial sshpirit also known as

Anything is possible I guess, I just like to look at these things from a different angle.
Everyone talks about horses, and lack of evidence and steel when Book of Mormon talks come up. I try to find something that hasn't been chewed over a thousand times.

Maybee I should go to my professors and tell them that my thesis is correct on thebasis of my emotions. It never surprises me how ignorant and unabashedly naieve the "emotion == truth" construct is.

I would love to see someone tell a professor they deserve an A instead of a C because they believe their paper is an A.
