Things We've Learned During the Board Wars

Post by _Bond...James Bond »

During the most recent string of board wars between Mormon Discussions and Mormon Apologetics and Discussion (which seem to be finally grinding to a halt--the board wars that is) we've learned and seen the following things:

1) Dr. Peterson and Mr. Scratch dislike each other, on some level

2) A fresh wave of critics (Runtu, beastie, Bond) have left the MAD boards.

3) Although MD is filled with porn and vulgarity, it doesn't stop the MAD posters from lurking, reading, and repeating what's said here.

4) Liz and Juliann don't get along---but to the sadness of the rivalry's fans, a steel cage match will not take place (sorry moksha.)

5) MAD posters can't (or choose not to) "hack" it here, many MD posters have given up trying to "hack" it there---yet both sides continue to talk about the other side.

6) Sput has a real fascination with this board. Frankly I don't know why. Has someone insulted him? He didn't even appear on my radar until he started the MD threads on the MAD board.

7) Bond thinks Juliann is a......nevermind.

I think I've learned that 12 years discussing apologetics is too long. I'm really discouraged about the whole thing today. I feel like all I ever accomplished in these years is to get myself out of the church.

I think you have summed up what we've learned pretty well, Bond! :)

Bond, those are good thoughts. I think a friendly rivalry between the two boards is a healthy thing. Having this board called a sty is just water off a duck's back. Siblings say worse things than that to one another. One sibling can be anal retentive (MAD) and another can be anal expressive (MD). Those are only traits. Their common humanity and the fact that they are both populated by shining children of God, is what truly bonds them together. Hopefully, that point will not be overlooked in any name calling exchange.

I think this time I really have learned my lesson: it is pointless to try and discuss Mormon claims with "true believers". And there are too many "true believers" on MAD to even try to have a discussion with the others.
We hate to seem like we don’t trust every nut with a story, but there’s evidence we can point to, and dance while shouting taunting phrases.

Bond, your list is lovely. I think you summed the situation up very well.

Mok, when are you going to let me have your children? Anal retentive? Anal expressive? I love it!

8) MAD is undergoing a devolution towards the freewheeling nastiness that keeps them away from this board. In other words, they are loosing the moral high ground. (Assuming you think they ever had it... I know many of you don't think that.)

9) The phrase "getting a dossier" has become part of the MAD lingo. (Much to my delight, I might add!)

I may have an over-active imagination, but I believe the reopening of sput's thread was due to Juliann's desire to create a dogpile attack on me, in order to provoke me to leave the board. She never could abide me being there. However, she can only get partial credit for my exodus, because I was never fully committed to staying there full time once I dealt with the Bromley issue, and I want to pull back from these sort of boards altogether.

I agree that the board is devolving, and may have to do with its disassociation from FAIR. While I have always found the moderating biased, I don't think the former FAIR would have encouraged this latest episode, either. The irony of it all is sweet - first the originators of FAIR become that which they detested at the Tanner's board (ie, biased moderation) and now they become that which they supposedly detest about MD. (exempting the foul language, of course, which is limited to the telestial board anyway) heh heh heh

by the way, dude, do you post on a skeptics site associated with Shermer, or has someone else stolen your name?

I've learned that some of the least productive and least pleasant people to discuss things with, often view the other party as the cause for the counterproductivity and unpleasantness in such discussions. I have learned that about myself, and have determined to change. And after having done so, I have noticed at least some measure of welcomed improvement.

Thanks, -Wade Englund-
