Perhaps this was not viewed as scripture because it had poetic beauty and warmth?
Perhaps it could not be fashioned like a club? Wait, I'm sounding too cynical. For many
reasons I find it as compelling as other scripture and perhaps loaded with equal to or greater
than symbolic truths, within those allegorical tales.

The Man

Solomon 10-14 Get up, my dear friend,
fair and beautiful lover—come to me!
Look around you: Winter is over;
the winter rains are over, gone!
Spring flowers are in blossom all over.
The whole world's a choir—and singing!
Spring warblers are filling the forest
with sweet arpeggios.
Lilacs are exuberantly purple and perfumed,
and cherry trees fragrant with blossoms.
Oh, get up, dear friend,
my fair and beautiful lover—come to me!
Come, my shy and modest dove—
leave your seclusion, come out in the open.
Let me see your face,
let me hear your voice.
For your voice is soothing
and your face is ravishing.

The Woman

15 Then you must protect me from the foxes,
foxes on the prowl,
Foxes who would like nothing better
than to get into our flowering garden.

16-17 My lover is mine, and I am his.
Nightly he strolls in our garden,
Delighting in the flowers
until dawn breathes its light and night slips away.
Turn to me, dear lover.
Come like a gazelle.
Leap like a wild stag
on delectable mountains!
Cry Heaven and let loose the Penguins of Peace

SoS is altogether too lovely to be a part of the Old Testament! Maybe Joseph Smith didn't care for Song of Songs because it portrayed a woman as someone to be truly loved and respected and not just dominated.

You guys do realize you're defending an erotic song about a DUN DUN DUN polygamous man.

Actually, most Biblical scholars do not believe Solomon wrote the Songs at all.

My NIV states that the modern interpretation is that Songs is a poetic drama celebrating the triumph of a maiden's pure love for her rustic shepherd over the courtly brandishments of Solomon.

Sorry, Nehor, I didn't read your link. The title alone is a turn-off and renders it unworthy of my time.

If it helps, the link is a joke, it's a satire of conservative extremism.

I don't think Solomon wrote it either but they chose Solomon to represent the male figure.

You asked for a link to Song of Solomon, Barrelomonkies http://Bible.crosswalk.com/OnlineStudyB ... of+solomon Just change the chapter number as needed.

From what I understand there is tons of symbolism in SoS. We did a brief study on SoS a while back and as I recall we decided that it was best to either interpret it as Jesus and the church all the way through or Solomon and his bride. In other words, not Jesus and the church in one verse and Solomon and his bride in the next verse, etc.

Joseph Smith probably viewed it as uninspired as it portrays fidelity.

I'm an equal-opportunity blamer. Liberals and Conservatives are both undermining morality, they just pick different virtues to target and different vices to praise.

You're right. I think I got her mixed up with her little sister: Song 8:8

ROTFL, Asbestosman! Poor thing had no breasts. What to do???

A transplant from her sister? Song 8:10. It's kinda like a kidney transplant what with reduction surgery and augmentation surgery all rolled into one.

What can I say, the Song of Solomon becomes an interesting source of entertainment when your a missionarry and the scriptures one of the few things you're allowed to read. I suppose if I were a clear thinker then "what I could say" would be absolutely nothing if I value my life. My wife will either laugh at me or kill me for what I wrote here. Would the chances be worth it to a clear thinker?
