Any Deists, existentialists, etc.?

Post by _LifeOnaPlate »

I know this board is called Mormon Discussions, but with all the people posting about why Mormonism is bad/wrong/ignorant/etc. I wonder: do any of the more critical posters here subscribe to any beliefs about God? Deism perhaps, or are there any staunch evolutionists who see the world as occurring by chance, etc.? I mean this thread to be used for discussions other than why Mormons are dumb, so I'd be interested to see your responses; thanks!

On my good days I'm Deistic. Maybe not that pure Deism of the Enlightenment, but on my good days I'd like to think there might be some guiding force in this giant popcorn popper of life. Of course on most days.....Agnostic. On the worst of days....atheist.

I'm an Atheistic-Agnostic Deist.

I don't think there is a God, don't really care if there is a God, and if there is a God, he simply put the laws of nature into place, gave it a spin and then left it the f*** alone.

I would describe my views as being most closely associated with Naturalistic Pantheism, although I have my purely atheistic moments.

Thanks for the responses so far, guys. Anyone else?

Additionally, it has been said by some evangelical critics with whom I have spoken that people who leave the LDS Church are highly likely to become atheists. Anyone experience this phenomenon?

And any other religious points of view?

I guess I'm an evolutionist? haha. That seems weird to type out. I mean, I think the theory of evolution seems the most likely and has the most scientific evidence behind it. Although evolution isn't about chance or about the beginnings of life - rather what occurred after life did begin. So that really doesn't have a lot to do with it?

Unless I'm completely unaware of some group that calls themselves 'staunch evolutionists' that subscribe to some chance evolution that also explains the beginnings of life?

I'm an agnostic.

And I think there are quite a few that leave the Church that do become atheists. I would think that what happens is they feel they were deceived and then how do they separate the deceit from the truth? It would make sense, to me, that they just toss all the dogma out. God goes out with the bath water.

I think that alot people who become disenchanted with the dogma and theology of any organized religion (and particularly the idea of a Supreme Being) will become non-religious, agnostic or atheist or just nonreligious (don't care). I'd say the question though comes down to believe in an Almighty. It's much easier to switch between belief in the theologies and dogmas of various monotheistic sects (espeecially closely related ones like Mormonism and Christianity or whatever) as long as the believe in the Almighty Power is maintained. If the fundamental belief in a "God" is lost....atheism or agnosticism or whatever seems to be the logical think for people to switch too....cause rationalism and logic without the needed leap of faith suggests atheism/agnosticism (particularly in this day in age when we know a lot more about the world around us to not blame weather phenomena on "Gods").

Alright....I know you don't understand that. Forgive me....it's Saturday.

Oh yeah I'm a "staunch evolutionist".

Loap, would one be precluded from Mormonism if one was to also an existentialist or evolutionist?
