I was just thinking about gossip and it occurred to me that there was an odd section in the D&C where God chastizes a particular person by name for the sin of adultery, D&C 66:
1 Behold, thus saith the Lord unto my servant William E. McLellin—Blessed are you, inasmuch as you have turned away from your iniquities, and have received my truths, saith the Lord your Redeemer, the Savior of the world, even of as many as believe on my name.

10 Seek not to be cumbered. Forsake all unrighteousness. Commit not adultery—a temptation with which thou hast been troubled.

Was God gossiping about William McLellin in the scriptures? I know that I would be mortified to have had any of my sins preserved in scriptures. Others are also called out for falling because of pride or, like James Covill (D&C 40), because of fear of persecution. But let us be fair, even Joseph Smith was chastized in the scriptures by name.

Maybe that's why he left the church.

Nope, wasn't God. And it wasn't gossip. It was a man trying to maintain authority over another man. Simple as that.

Too bad Bro. McLellin couldn't wait just a bit longer - then he could have had those women given to him in polygamous marriage rather than commit the sin of adultery.

It is a good thing the list was not inclusive of all the Saints at that time - it would be burdensome to lug a twenty pound book to Gospel Doctrine class.

Yeah, those public rebukes are canonized forever, LOL. Poor guys. Wasn't Martin Harris chastized in the scriptures for not giving Joseph Smith money? Something about him coveting his own money, which I didn't realize was possible. Once you consider Joseph Smith is the one writing all this stuff, it's hilarious. The balls that guy must've had.

By the way, it occurs to me that I may also be engaging in gossip by quoting those scriptures. Oh well. I guess I'm not any better than God is after all. ;)
