The one glaring problem is that the women appear to be married to him until his death. Not so Fanny Alger, and the Partridge sisters were told their marriage was at an end in 1843.

The short answer was that Emma wanted them gone. Here's Emily's recollection:
“We remained in the family several months after this...She sent for us one day to come to her room. Joseph was present, looking like a martyr. Emma said some very hard things ...She would rather her blood would run...than be polluted in this manner...Joseph came to us and shook hands with us, and the understanding was that all was ended between us. I for one meant to keep this promise I was forced to make.” Emily continued, “We looked upon the covenants we had made as sacred”. Joseph arranged for Emily and Eliza to move out of the Smith home. Emily wrote, “I do not remember [speaking to] Joseph but once...after I left the Mansion house and that was just before he started for Carthage."

How heartbreaking for those young women. Often I think of the first wives and imagine the predatory nature of the males in these relationships.
Yet, even after the relationship I can't imagine how upsetting it was for these young women.
To be in a relationship that they considered a marriage and then for them to be turned out.
Just heartbreak and despair for all.
I want to say something ugly about Joseph Smith. I'm checking my impulse control right now.

It just occurred to me that I am often repulsed by the early Church history of polygamy.
I'm just an (I believe) unbiased observer. Yet, these actions are so repugnant to me it's hard to
check my emotions when I reply.
I can not even imagine how shocking this material would be to learn for those that revere Joseph Smith.
