Why All The CFR?

Post by _Ray A »

I'm not against providing references for my statements, when I'm not tired, and have the inclination and time. But there is nothing in the rules of this board, like MADB, which states that you must provide references if asked. Posters should do their own checking, and then call others if their statements are out of context, or even invented. I don't have to provide anything. If you think I'm wrong, then you show me why, and produce the correct context. Don't ask me to go through ten volumes, then claim I'm wrong if I don't "produce the goods".

I'll give a small example. Scratch asked me to back my statement that Infymus posted his real name on this board, with a "CFR". Shades later confirmed this, but he didn't refer to any particular thread. Scratch, however, accepted Shades' qualification without reservation. Now why didn't Scratch ask Shades for a "CFR"? No link was provided, yet Scratch accepted Shades' word. So I guess it's a case of "ask your enemy for CFR, but accept it when it comes from a friend"? Could be.

I think this whole copycat idea of "CFR" has gone MAD (pun intended). I'm not saying "CFRs" are bad, per se, but when it's used to win points, I don't think it has much credibility. But this copycat trend seems to increasing here. In some instances I think CFR can be genuine (but should still be at the volition of the poster), but lately its being used in a manipulative way.

Generally, it can mean the same as "I call BS." References are not necessarily expected. Sometimes the claims made on this board are so outlandish and the posters making them so completely unaware that CFR is really the only thing that stops them, at least temporarily.

That's precisely what I mean. Think about it.

Couldn't agree more Ray.

I get so fed up with the constant CFR's, especially for things that are non-CFR-able. Like when I say that the LDS church teaches to stay away from Anti material like it's the plague! How in the hell am I supposed to CFR that. I'll probably get CFR'd to show that I actually got a CFR when I asked this...

It would be nice to be able to say to people like Charity or Gazelam, "I call BS." Sadly, it would only give offense.

Since your ears are somewhat less delicate, CFR is not necessary. Plain old "I call bulls***" works just fine.

I don't have a problem with anecdotes, and I don't think CFRs are needed. Some things come from experience only, and you can't CFR them. That may be opinon, but it does not make opinion valid, or invalid. One has to weigh this opinion against their own experiences and opinion, and CFRs are not much use here. I doubt there's a poster here, pro or con Mormonism, who doesn't agree and disagree, to some extent, with post content, yet can't fulfil "CFR".

Do I have to prove everything? And if I can't provide "CFR", does that make it false? No.

But your "bulls***" could be another's valid spiritual experience. So, we've established why you use "CFR".

You might be accused of switching teams from time to time, but at least your lack of sense of humor remains faithfully intact.
