Reporter: Should God speak to you... how would you handle that?" asked reporter Natalie Jacobsen.
Romney: "I don't recall God speaking to anyone since the time of Moses and the burning bush."
Hmmm...uhhh....what about Joseph Smith? Don't you believe that God spoke to Joe, Mitt???????

It was certainly a stupid answer to a stupid question. People are fixated over Romney's religion to a ludicrous level. I doubt we have ever seen the likes of it.

I believe that the press is becoming fixated on Romney's religion because he keeps giving very defensive and somewhat bizarre answers to questions. Since the press doesn't quite "get" Mormonism, they keep asking somewhat strange questions which prompt even stranger answers.
There is no anti-Mormon conspiracy in the press, it there were they would be going after Reed and Hatch also.

Gordo added four more words to that...
"That we teach that".

As I have said on more than one occasion, this guy would sell his grandmother for politics.

You know, I may have to modify my views on this. Part of me thinks that any discussion of religion is a distraction, a tool being used by some on the religious right. All candidates, from both parties, pander to religion to a great extent. But, you know, I really do want to know if someone thinks he can hear God speaking clearly to him. I think Bush believes that, and I think this particular (delusional) belief of his has greatly harmed our country in that it has led Bush to be unwilling to hear and seriously consider oppositional viewpoints. If God tells you what to do, after all, there's no need to debate it. And the unwillingness to debate these issue with people who are strongly opposed to their viewpoint has resulted in the horrible mess we are in today, as far as Iraq is concerned. Our greatest presidents have surrounded themselves with great minds that were willing to vocally oppose the president's viewpoint, and were able to argue their points well.
So I personally like this answer of Romney's, although I understand that it conflicts with Mormon teachings and will cause Mormons to wonder what kind of Mormon he is. (as I am) If he really doesn't think God talks with people, then he'll make important decisions in a more responsible manner.
Of course, I have to admit I'm also suspicious of his answer. Just how liberal of a Mormon would you have to be to not believe God has talked to people since Mormons? I'm beginning to think one reason Romney has foot in mouth disease. "I marched with MLK", "I've been a hunter all my life", and now "God hasn't talked to people since Moses". He'll be called on this.

Perhaps it's not that he doesn't think God talks to people as it is that he knows more about his religion than he's letting on. Perhaps he doesn't want his bishop to know that he knows about the multiple accounts of the First Vision, and how Joseph kept changing it. Now that would be hilarious! A closet NOM in the White House!

No he doesn't. He continues to be grilled about it. How many others were asked such an inane question?

I would not call it an anti Mormon conspiracy. An obsession perhaps and yes, bigotry by some. Ask the man about his political positions. He already has said numerous times he was not going to take direction from SLC. Frankly all the religuos obsession from the press, and from the candidates pandering on religion is getting tiresome.
