For those living outside the Zion Curtain, we have a columnist here (Robert Kirby, SL Tribune) who epitomizes self deprecation of his Mormon faith. He's a breath of fresh air in a community where there is so much "us vs. them" fighting...he's always the first thing I read in the paper. His article today was particularly on target:
Kirby: How to make friends with non-Mormons
http://www.sltrib.com/faith/ci_7781982
I loved the comment about having non-Mormon friends over...: "Next, be prepared for the conversation to wander outside the ward boundaries. Lots of really interesting people don't have a clue what happened in Relief Society last week, and they don't count it as a loss."
Brilliant!
I have a tee-shirt with the saying "Kirby for Prophet." Maybe I'll wear it today!
Gotta love Kirby!

I've loved Kirby for years. The man has a gift.
What I thought was more interesting was the comment that said the poster would have to move to be accepted, because he was neither gentile nor Mormon. He was a former Mormon. How sad is that! To feel like you have to move, lock, stock, and barrel, in order to be accepted in your neighborhood. Wow. Sad.

Yes, I recently moved to upper Sugarhouse for that reason...there are more non and ex-Mormons, and the Mormons there are much less judgmental and very accepting. Coincidently, it's also the most expensive place per square foot to live in Utah! Wonder why?!
Of all the potential "insider's," I think Kirby has more potential to change the church from within. He has a popular platform, and he is not afraid to tell it like it is. He is so popular that I think the church would get such a black-eye for ex-ing him...I think he's safe!

You gotta love this comment under Kirby's column today:

I find it laugh out loud funny that Kirby's columns every Saturday usually have more inspiration in them than what I get out of the Ensign or Conference talks.
It's too bad that a columnist has more practicality than some of the LDS Church leaders in certain issues. It seems that they give lip service to LDS Members to include everyone, of all faiths, but then nothing ever changes.
Another fine one by Kirb!
