Are we really this weak??

I'm watching Mars Rising and they are talking about the psychology of going to Mars.
They are talking about the makeup of the crew, and whether they should have all men, all women or a mixture.
The claims they are making is that if you mix the crew, that sex is going to happen. So, just let it happen. We can't stop it and we should just go with it.
Why do we believe that if you get men and women together, that the ONLY conceivable outcome is that they WILL have sex?? Is it just me, or do we not give people enough credit for the ability to control their baser urges?

It's just you.
Combine people in a close environment with no other social life, give them cabin fever, throw in a sense of isolation, and the tension that comes with risking your life and you have hormones going crazy. I think it's a valid concern.

It's not just you. To an extent, I am of the same mind. In a way, and as with a variety of choice-related things, it is about setting expectation. People often rise or lower themselves to the level of expectation. I have seen this principle played out in both directions in grade school classrooms--though in terms of scholastic achievements. The teachers that set low scholastic expectations for their students, tended to engender low levels of scholastic performance, and vice-versa. In principle, I believe the same is true for adults and sex.

Of course it is a concern, but do we just immediately go to the lowest common denominator and just assume that sex IS going to happen? Especially with the psychological testing and training that these astronauts go through.
Perhaps they WANT to get people with low morals, believing that sex onboard will help the psychology. Perhaps it is just another thing to go through. Exercise, read, have sex, shower, etc...

Of course astronauts will have sex.
Get the right mixture with nothing to do and what other recreational activiies are they going to do?
As for psych and training, all I can say is that crazy astronaut, a Navy Captian, and her breakdown cross country to threaten her lover's other girlfriend.
Hey, put me in a tin can with Bruunhildas and after 3 months, they'll be looking like Beyonce to me.

I wouldn't assume it. I would consider it a strong possibility, maybe even a probablility. It would be more trouble than it's worth. How do you break up with someone in a small confined space? Deal with jealousy? I'd avoid it. Same reason I think submarines should stick to one gender.

I think that with a lot of potential crews, it would be inevitable, and that it would be very difficult to predict or control it. I'm not sure why it should necessarily alarm someone in and of itself, except the religious folks who think that by doing so these people would be offending God. I don't think there's a God to offend, so I think it would be up to the individuals involved, and whatever partners or spouses they might have. Perhaps it would be better for crews to go up who aren't leaving any firm attachments to lovers back on Earth to avoid at least that aspect of potential problems.
And what makes you so sure that sex would be avoided with all same gender crews? At the very least most of the astronauts would be whacking off when time and circumstance permitted.

I think they're just going from history. Look at the military. Anytime you mix the two genders together, sex happens. Heck, look at any organization where young singles (or married) people are put together. I don't think there's a case where it hasn't.
Even in church we're told how wrong it is, so forth and so on. But how many so called "activities" have there been where a couple have "hooked up"? Stories abound (some true, some not), but it happens - ALL THE TIME.
My only thought was, "Weightless sex! How cool is that."

The question is do they put in zero-G sex cage or web or something to prevent injuries.

It's a problem, or potential problem, in the way in which it changes inter-personal dynamics. It requires a crew that can work productively and reasonably harmoniously with each other. Throw in a good dose of sexual tension, and you've potentially disrupted the smooth and efficient operation of the crew.
I see it as a legitimate risk and one that I'd be concerned about.
