Pet Peeve to start off the New Year...LOL

Since we just finished a Christmas season, I thought I would mention this. Why do Mormons feel the need to change the words to standard Christmas carols? This has always bugged me. What's wrong with "heaven and nature sing"? Why the need to change it to "saints and angels"?

Also...why did the MoTab have to change the words to "Battle Hymn of the Republic"?

"Let us die to make men free" was written for a reason. It's a battle hymn!

OK...rant off.

LOL

From a cynical point of view, I would say that the Conservative's position is that nature is something to be exploited and and profited from, so they do not wish to sing its praises. I am uncertain about the saints and angels. Did you say that the MoTab Choir sings this one?

I'm amazed they haven't axed hymn #51: "Sons of Michael He Approaches."

Current Version:

Sons of Michael, he approaches! Rise, the ancient father greet.
Bow, ye thousands, low before him; Minister before his feet.

Original Version:

Sons of Michael, he approaches! Rise; the Eternal Father greet

Even though it's been sanitized, it's still a clear throwback to the Adam-God doctrine. I suspect it will be MIA in the next hymnal.

And when they recorded "Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree" they left out the word "damn." Ooooh, censorship!

The LDS version also deletes the second verse of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," liz (see LDS hymnal, #209).

Christ by highest heav'n adored
Christ the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold Him come
Offspring of a Virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see
Hail the incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with man to dwell
Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hark! The herald angels sing
"Glory to the newborn King!"

Here's my question. "Danny Boy" is apparently one of President Gordon B. Hinckley's favorite songs. Do they modify the lyrics to that? Does the Mormon Tabernacle Choir change the lyrics to it when they sing it?

It's a worthwhile pet peeve. Gets confusing for those ecumenical folks when they go to visit LDS meetings and find the hymns changed. Aaaargh. And imagine those who only hear "Scotland the Brave" when "Praise to the Man" is sung.

LOL! Yes, and they also substituted "pass around the cider and the pumpkin pie" for "pass around the coffee and the pumpkin pie" in the Sleighride Song.

That's why Bob Rivers is my favourite Christmas Crooner.

Which such songs as "Walking 'round in Women's Underwear", "Come all ye Deadheads" and "The 12 Pains of Christmas" what could be better?

You mean the Old Spice Aftershave song? Wait a minute, that is really dating me - next I will be reciting the Burma Shave jingles.

Here is one to curl your little toes. In "How Great Thou Art" the thunder isn't "mighty" it is only "rolling." Which is more scientifically correct, you know. Thunder isn't "mighty." In the immortal words of Chad Brock,John Hadley, and Kelly Garrett "Thunder's just a noise, boys, lightnin' does the work."

Talk about a blast from the past. This one was my favorite. "Slow down, pa / Sakes alive / Ma missed signs / Four and five / Burma Shave " It was on the road between our house in town and the farm.
