A friend of mine went through the open house of the Rexburg temple last week.

She told me that she LOVES how the church spares no expense for the building of these temples.

According to this news story, Rexburg Temple Preview,

The wood in the building was imported from Africa. The stone and tile came from Israel.

How does the church justify this kind of blatant, gross over-spending on a temple? I mean, I'm all for making a temple look nice, but isn't wood and stone harvested in Idaho sufficient? Or even the western states. Or even in North America!! Did they REALLY need to import it? Would God reject this temple if the wood and stone were of a medium-high quality instead of the excellence of imported goods? Do you think God is pleased by this, or might He be a little bit ticked that the extra money didn't go to the poor?

I can't recall exactly when, but I remember hearing a conference talk about how the speakers father wanted to buy a new car. The mother said that the old car was sufficient, and that they should give the money they would have used to buy the new car to the poor. If anyone can find that talk, I'd be most appreciative. But, how dare they preach to me to give MY money to the poor when they waste money like this.

And all of this largely to do works on behalf of the dead, for crimeny sake. The dead!!

With all the want in the world, what kind of an organization requires sacrifice to benefit entities that have absolutely no ability to benefit from the sacrifice in the first place?

Outrageous that's all I can say. How can the church justify spending that kind of money?
Then again they did spend a billion dollars on the SLC mall.

Maybe God/Jesus/Joseph Smith listens better when prayers come from a million dollar temple.
I am really glad that none of my money went to build that temple, my money is better spent on new shoes among other things.

What I am curious about is how this sits with the members, doesn't this upset them in the least, this kind of money being spent on a building?

Well, this girl is ultra-TBM, so if she is any indication of how the general membership feels, they are ecstatic.

If God doesn't reject gold fillings I'm pretty sure he won't reject these extravagant temples.

Amazing then kind of mentality the church produces. TBM's blindly pay their 10% and more but yet don't see the injustice in spending this kind of on a building when so many members are struggling to make ends meet.

I don't understand how they can not see how unfair it is.

I think the Mormon church would be one of the first to criticize the Catholics for great and lavish buildings and even see them as the great spacious building in the Book of Mormon and yet fail to see the mote in their own eye.

Since you ask how we members feel. I feel great about it. Temples are lovely buildings and if you read the inscription on each temple it is a House of the Lord. We don't expect our Lord and Savior to have to stay in a Motel 6.

I always find people living in the affluence of America complaining that the Church isn't doing more for the poor peole of the world to be pretty pathetic. That's right. Let somebody else take care of the poor. And then gripe they don't do it better than they do.

I pay tithing which supports the building of temples. I think that is a great way to spend the Lord's money. You who don't pay tithing have absolutely NO standing in the matter.

I take care of the poor and I take of myself and my family as well. I know where my money goes, it goes for new shoes.
Doesn't bother you at times to give up 10% of your income when you could spend it on something or someone more deserving than the church.
The Lord's money I really don't think the Lord needs your money, is there a mall where the Lord lives?
Where does he live by the way?

I don't pay tithing but find it very interesting that those who do, do so with questioning how it is spent.
