Utah businesses lacking in health care coverage
Utah is the leader in yet another category, but it's not one to be proud of. Employers in Utah are dropping their employees' health care benefits faster than any other state in the country, and it is having an effect on Utah families.
"Working families are being asked to pay so much more of the premium that they choose to go without. So, that's just really, deeply tragic," said Judi Hilman, of the Utah Health Policy Project.
Hilman says that a lot of it comes from the number of small businesses in Utah. But there is a solution. "Get involved in advocacy," she said.
Not sure what this says about Mormonism, but I'm sure it's bad somehow...

I'm sure Hinckley ordered it;) Utah seems to have a very conservative/anti-labor business culture. Not sure why. I think it has to do more with the extreme conservative politics in the state than with the LDS religion. Of course, maybe the LDS religion created the extreme conservative politics. Who knows?

I don't doubt it.
Reminds me of how Utahans "pat themself on the back" when it comes to "giving to charity".
Take away tithes and Utah is is the worst.

Could this be related to A) large families, and B) a tendency in conservative families for the father to be the sole breadwinner? This would make sense, as businesses in Utah would tend to be providing healthcare for more people per worker than businesses outside of Utah. Perhaps Utah businesses just can't afford to compete in the wider marketplace where their employees are following the advice of prophets past and present to reproduce as much as possible and have the husband do all of the providing?

Hey Scottie,
I have a secret to tell you as an employer.
If I am a devout Mormon I will rather pay my tithing than offering my employees health coverage, who most of the cases cannot afford
even on a regular price.
Six months ago I did give my employees health coverage, and every year I will knock off 10% of their deduction. In five years if they stay with us
they will pay Nothing!
But of course my employees as far more important than any church.
Yesterday I did offer them 401k, asking them to invest in God as tithing, everyone of them declined.

This is not exactly true. I would say however that Utah Mormons are weak on social consciousness. It is not the fault of the church but the fault of a faulty culture of self reliance. A product of american capitalism and the frontier spirit. We seem to forget that Utah was founded by people who were self reliant and strong minded. And they did rely on their brother and sisters for help and support in certain instances but they were a proud people. Hence, the lack of employee health care.
Now we do need to remember that the LDS church is world wide church and in many parts of the world the LDS support nationalized health care. But then again, they are not in Utah. Thus, these Mormons would not need your plan at all.

I think the United States either needs socialized medicine or to get rid of the Health insurance industry. If we do the former, expect taxes to increase. Do the latter and Health care costs will be more than cut in half. Being uninsured is death right now because the Health care industry and the Health Insurance companies have made it so.

I don't know the answer, but the status quo isn't working for the majority of Americans. Something needs to change.

Agreed. Now if only we could find politicians willing to touch that third rail.

well to do Mormons don't give a damn about the serfs that work for them. Why should they avoid family ski trips to Aspen just so a bunch of less diligent people can get medical care?
I say screw the working classes. They must have been fence sitters with one leg on elohims lawn, that's why they are not business owners.
Family wealth and prosperity is intrinsically linked to perceived spirituality in Mormon culture. There is no getting around that.
