Is it currently possible for a Mormon to have a temple recommend, if the business they own and operate is against church doctrine?

So... could Bro Marriott hold a temple recommend while his hotels peddle pornographic movies? Is there a problem with store owners that sell beer and wine? Or lawyers that defend murderers or pedophiles?

As far as I can see, it's okay for the owner of a smut store to hold a temple recommend. Or the producer of a pornographic movie to hold a temple recommend. All they have to do is pay their tithing and be honest in their dealings.

I'll go ahead an take issue with the "lawyers defending murderers or pedophiles" part. Defense lawyers play an important part in guaranteeing that criminal defendants receive the due process granted to them under the Constitution. There is absolutely no moral deficiency in those who play that part. I would happily accept the position of public defender to fulfill this role for those accused of crime, and have no second thoughts about doing so. Please don't confuse the attorney with the criminal.

I have to agree with Skippy on this.

For the rest, I know of no official policy. I'm sure the Marriotts are not in any danger though there is alcohol and soft porn there just as I don't think a grocer who sells cigarettes and beer is in danger.

I think you are correct. Nothing in the TRI (as far as I know), asking about what one promotes, encourages, sells, supports (other than anti-mormon organizations).

Marriott hotel policies of selling liquor or offering explicit adult movies on the in-room televisions does not prevent Bill Marriott from having a temple recommend. ZCMI used to sell tea, coffee, tobacco and liquor up through the presidency of Joseph F. Smith. The Hotel Utah used to serve products proscribed by the Word of Wisdom. During the time it was open in downtown Salt Lake City, the Inn at Temple Square did likewise.

It's not soft porn. My, uh, friend told me. Soft porn is people pretending to have sex and all you really see is breasts.

They could certainly do without the porn at the Marriott hotels but they wouldn't go far at all if they stopped serving alcohol (wedding receptions, their bars, etc.)

It's not "soft porn" at all. It's definitely adult movies, and plenty of hotel chains manage to get by these days without offering an adult movie line-up as part of their pay-per-view in-room movie package. Marriotts are conspicuous in their participation in having adult movie offerings.

Anyone who doubts this, go into a Westin, Sheraton, Radisson or Hilton these days and then go into a Marriott and compare.

Wow! I assumed it would be soft porn. I didn't know any chain offered hard core. Of course, if you must view porn what's the point of watching soft?

So essentially he says he sold booze for business reasons. I understand somewhat but somewhat not.

I recall a prominent Church leader in my area that ended his career as CEO of a Corporation much larger than Marriott. He also once said that in entertaining, even in his home, he had to offer liquor based on cultural norms and practices. Had he not he most likely would not have risen to the top of this company he worked for.

It is a difficult balance. Now I had the opportunity to take a job that would have been a very good an high position in a large wine and liquor company but declined the interview when I was asked to come for one. I am not saying I am better then Marriott or this other person, but I could not square being LDS and working for a company the sells liquor and only liquor.
