Hinckley's temple building spree.. How useful has it been?

Since the Mormon media seems to be pushing Gordon's Temple building spree as his greatest accomplishment, I thought it would make a good thread to discuss.
Of all the temples he spent money on, how many are operating on a full time basis?
I have heard reports that many end up being closed most of the week and only open when there are enough people who show up to do works for the dead.
Is that a great legacy? A bunch of empty extravagant buildings with a huge utility bill?

Pretty much. He just threw around money that wasn't his.
And throw in another two billion for a shopping mall.
From a business perspective, I think Hinckley was one of the worst prophets of them all.
Growth stagnated under his watch, and he got on TV and made a complete ass of himself and the Church.

Sure it was. He was Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Corporation(s).

It would be interesting to sum up all of the money he blew on the Mc"Temple franchise and the $300M Mega'nacle.
I truly would have wept when he died had he spent that money helping the LIVING needy people rather than the DEAD.
But like you said, he was a business man and perhaps felt that scattering a hundred expensive buildings around the US and globe would help increase tithes..
It is a real shame. All of that money wasted on dead people.
If the temple work was that important, and he wanted to get it as close to the people as possible, why not have a facade that they drag out into the gymnasiums once a week on temple night?

Bingo.

Bingo.
Bingo in the temples... now that would draw them in! At least the lonely old folks... wait the place is crawling with them most night, as voluteer workers.

You are right on every point xcept revitalizing SL&Mall will fatten up church coffers beyond imagination.
Just the condo & luxury suites will bring immense profits, the mall likewise will profit in couple decades.
They are insuring SL will be one of the best (most expensive) city to live.
As you said, it is a very small consolation considering how he did screw up the rest of church affairs.

It's actually smart business, although it might not appear to be on its face. It develops the real estate in a way that has flexible use going forward, and it insures a steady stream of tithes and offerings and members dedicated locally to the cause (like mini- country clubhouses).

With the recent topic of 2nd Annointings, which apparently are performed in temples, I have to wonder if the McTemple phenomenon hasn't allowed the leadership to build a base of utterly faithful, older members who are completely dedicated to the cause by inducting them into the elite, secret ranks of the exalted, and in places that otherwise might be weak in church membership.

Plenty of rank and file temple-attending members of the LDS Church are plenty tied to the temple without even receiving a second anointing, or perhaps even being aware of it. That's one of the purposes of having older couples serve missions, including temple missions, and serve as temple workers. It definitely binds them to the club in a way they might not be otherwise. Sure, there might be a few in each temple location who've received their second anointing, but I think it's pretty peripheral to the core loyalty. It's not like there's a Second Anointing Club, or anything.
