The cafeteria Mormon thread got me wondering.

Which LDS doctrines and principles are open to personal inspiration/confirmation/revelation?

Off the top of my fading LDS theology memory:

1. Tithing on gross, net, or net-net?
2. Beer(mild drink made from barley)
3. Coffee and tea(not explicitly forbidden in the WoW)
4. Cigars are ok because you do not inhale the smoke and you smoke them outside as to not even inhale your own second hand smoke
5. Garmie wearing(only during temple work)
6. Temple ceremony
7. Callings of leaders(you think Tommy should not be there and therefore ignore everything he spouts off)
8. The hill cumorah in NY is the same one in the Book of Mormon battles and you teach this to your sunday school teen class
9. As taught by BY and others, there is a cave in the NY hill cumora full of gold records and you teach this to your sunday school teen class
10. Indians are Hebrews with mutated DNA
11. Women encouraged to work
12. Mission program(opting to keep your children out of it)
13. Age at marriage
14. Number of years before you and your wife have children
15. Home/Visit teaching program out dated

Others?

Which of the above are members allowed to hold personal interpretation/confirmation that is outside of the status quo?

Part of me wishes to go back to full activity just to f*** with their minds by using their own rules.

Well, technically, those are all open to personal interpretation. You just aren't allowed to act or on that personal interpretation or otherwise teach it or talk about it at church.

None of them are in the sense I think you are talking about. However, one may speculate and believe all one wants about details not given or described in doctrine as long as such does not contradict other doctrine and as long as you don't teach such for doctrine.

May I remain a member if I

- Pay 10% tithes on net-net?
- Drink beer?
- Drink coffee and tea?
- Wear garmies only during temple work?
- Opt out of temple work for the dead?
- Opt out of HT/VT?
- Think of Monson as only the president and not the prophet?

Doctrine comes only from the standard LDS canon? If so, then the above are free to be discussed and taught.

My guess is that it depends on your bishop...

Wouldn't most be Ok with that tithe? If you discussed beer/coffee/tea drinking in interviews, some bishops might counsel you to stop, might not sign you TR, but not ex you. You could probably "get away" with limited garment usage. People might suspect and check, but again, what matters is the impression you create for your Bishop. And depending on your excuse for not doing teaching, individual Bishops might not be pleased but hardly ex you. If you didn't go around talking/"teaching" Monson-as-only-president, etc. a Bishop would not care much, probably.

Now all of this seems to mean its open to personal interpretation: the Bishop's. Is that your point, B&L?

Of course. You won't have a temple recommend, but you an certainly be a member.

I don't know about gross, net or net-net but I believe that if you have major money going into their cofers then all the rest can slide. Just like the indulgences that Luther reformed against.

So then, where is the standard? If each bishop is allowed to vary on the so called doctrines, how can that be just?

What if you establish you beliefs with a bishop, then a few years later they change the guard and the new bishop says nope to your previous arrangement?
