This guy was full on lying about the Joseph Smith Papyri!
I had some small talk early on about supporting gay rights etc... then I led him down a rabbit hole lined with papyrus! In short, he says he never heard of the rediscovered papyrus, but once I start quoting Prof Rhodes, he admits to have taken two courses from him and did know about the papyrus, but that does not matter!
Then he gets weird about "translating".
Too friggin funny.
I have a rare treat for you all! The entire text of the conversation follows.
Since most of what the Mo spouted was crap, it is color coded brown, mine is in green
Note: Names were changed for ease of reading
Mo: How may I help you?
Me: Good evening Mo
Me: I am curious about your policies
Mo: OK.
Mo: Anything specific?
Me: may I express differing opinions that oppose what your leaders say?
Me: like gay rights
Mo: Sure.
Me: being against the marriage ammendment?
Mo: Was that a question?
Me: yes
Me: I see in a Salt Lake newspaper that some who publicly oppose the leaders opinions are being disciplined
Mo: I see...
Me: would I being a member be disciplined for holding public views that are opposite of the leaders?
Mo: Often those who are disciplined are those commit some sin that goes against church beliefs...
Mo: the difficult thing in these cases is that the church never discloses why it disciplined a member...
Mo: so all we ever hear is one side of the story...
Mo: that of the disgruntled member.
Me: disgruntled?
Mo: You can hold views that are different from the leaders without being disciplined.
Mo: Yes, often those who are disciplined end up disgruntled, I imagine...
Me: meaning those who hold differing opinions in regards to say gay rights and such?
Mo: People are aloud to hold whatever opinions they want...
Mo: They can even do what they want, though some actions may not allow them to retain their Church membership.
Me: or retain employment with their university?
Me: That is too bad.
Me: I see good things in your religion. But see good in the gay community as well.
Mo: If you are speaking of BYU, it is a privately owned university, and employees take a job understanding that they will meet certain standards, if those standards are not met, then I imagine the person may be fired.
Mo: That is great that you see good in all things.
Me: I believe that many gay folks are just born that way. Do you?
Me: Living in California I know several.
Me: Very nice people, one lesbian couple even has two adorable children
Me: wonderful loving parents the two of them
Mo: I don't know if they are born that way or not. I know they are often good people who do good things. We just don't agree with their lifestyle.
Me: as I am sure they hold similar but respectful feelings about ours as well.
Mo: I am sure.
Me: so then I would not be able to be a member if I was public with my opinions about gay rights?
Mo: I don't think you would want to be a member if you disagreed about something so important...
Mo: The fact is we believe the Bible to be the word of God, we also believe God has called prophets today and that He (God) communicates with us today...
Me: oh no Mo, don't get me wrong my friend, I say live and let live, and love all like Christ
Me: like Christ taught
Mo: We know that He has commanded us not to participate in homosexual relationships.
Me: where is that?
Mo: Those that do, can of course, without any malice from us, we just don't believe that is a lifestyle God has asked us to live.
Mo: I am sending you a scripture, it's the highlighted one...
Mo: http//scriptures.LDS.org/en/lev/20/13#13
Mo: Did you receive that?
Me: yes thank you
Me: but in that same book are versus which condemn the consumption of shell fish, like shrimp
Me: I love shrimp, do you?
Mo: Here is another one from Romans...
Mo: link
Me: link
Me: I thought Christ brought in a new gospel with the new testament and such things where abolished?
Me: things from the old testament?
Mo: He did, that was why I sent you Romans...
Mo: Romans was written by Paul.
Me: true, but only speak of men?
Mo: Let me provide the verse in context...
Mo: Wait...
Mo: What was your question?
Me: my public support for gay rights and allowing them to live free and be married if they so choose.. would I be allowed to remain a member?
Mo: I'm not sure...
Mo: Would you want to be a member?
Me: as I said I do see good ideas in your religion
Me: the family focus, but I see that in many churches..
Mo: We believe that homosexuality is against what God has commanded. To be a member of the Church, I think you would have to believe that.
Mo: Believe that what the Church teaches is truly inspired of God.
Me: the few LDS that I do know seem to be nice and genuinly kind
Me: would I be required to condemn gay people?
Mo: Not condemn them, but certainly not participate in homsexual practices...
Me: no, I am quite happily married to my wonderful wife
Mo: Before you look for answers to these questions, if you are sincerely interested in finding out if this Church is true...
Mo: You should find out about the Book of Mormon.
Mo: Find out if it is true.
Me: oh yes, I have heard of this. Your second Bible?
Mo: It's not the Bible, we use it along with the Bible...
Mo: Could I send you a page that describes it?
Me: of course!
Me: I like to read about other beliefs
Mo: One second...
Mo: link
Me: This is about the american indians?
Mo: Not just about them, there are peoples in the Book we don't know about. Some peoples that we don't know where they came from or where they went...
Mo: The book is chiefly about two different people on the American Continent. The Nephites and the Lamanites.
Mo: American Indians likely do have ancestors that trace back to these peoples.
Me: Mongolians?
Mo: Nope. Others, like I said we don't know that much about these other peoples.
Mo: Could I send you a free Book of Mormon to read?
Me: I read somewhere that the american indians were traced back to Mongolia
Mo: I don't know.
Me: free book of Mormons? Oh no, I am reading the one online from your links
Mo: OK...
Me: I see others there as well?
Mo: How far have you read?
Me: just skimming them all
Mo: Yes, there are others...
Mo: As I said, we believe that God continues giving revelation to man.
Me: the pearls of great price?
Me: Moses?
Me: and abraham?
Me: where did these come from?
Mo: Moses and Abraham are books withing the Pearl of Great Price.
Me: I see, but were did they originate?
Me: did moses and abraham of the Bible write these?
Mo: One moment...
Me: I don't see these in the Bible
Mo: It is a translation of some Egyptian papyri containing the writings of the prophet Abraham, excerpts from Joseph Smith’s testimony and history, and the Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A reference from the
Mo: Pearl of Great Price.
Me: some translation of scrolls? like the dead sea scrolls?
Me: wow i've never heard of this
Mo: Have you had the chance to pray about what you have read in the Book of Mormon?
Mo: It's posted in the website.
Mo: Perhaps like the dead sea scrolls.
Me: I just started skimming the scripture web site with you tonight
Mo: I don't know.
Me: these scrolls are intriging to my wife and I
Me: she is reading over my shoulder ) )
Me: so moses wrote these scrolls?
Me: my wife is asking if your church has them ?
Mo: Yes, it's an interesting book.
Me: do other christians see them and use them?
Me: If they were written by moses, they should use them no?
Me: just like the Bible
Mo: That is a good question. I believe they were destroyed in a fire, in the Chicago musuem, in the 70's.
Mo: I have to check up on that.
Me: in the 70s?
Me: ohhh 1970s?
Mo: Other churches don't use them. To do so would be to admit Joseph Smith was a prophet.
Me: the chicago museum burned down in the 1970s?
Mo: Because he translated them by the power of God.
Mo: I believe so...
Mo: Have you gone to the website LDS.org?
Mo: You may be able to find more information there.
Me: no, just Mormon.org
Mo: That's right.
Me: my wife said the great chicago museum burned down in the late 1800s
Me: 1970s?
Me: are you sure?
Me: my wife is on her macbook looking at LDS.org and reading more about the abraham and moses books
Me: she said it looks like the scrolls were written by abraham
Mo: I may have my dates wrong, as I said I may need to look that up.
Me: wow, so Joseph Smith translated these scrolls of Abraham of the Bible?
Me: oh wait, she is googling ...
Me: she loves google and wikipedia
Mo: Yes.
Me: she has found some links to brigham young university.
Me: brigham young was a LDS founder?
Me: oh BYU... I know that from Steve Young!
Mo: Those may be interesting.
Me: she is reading fast and furious.. what a googlemister
Me: she said that these abraham scrolls were found!
Mo: He was a prophet after Jospeh Smith was killed.
Me: in 1967
Mo: The same
Mo: !
Mo: Ha!
Me: the article says they were thought to have been burned by some stories by Emma Smith?
Me: but they found them.. wow!
Me: oh wow, she found a picture of them
Me: this is neat!
Me: ancient scriptures from abraham!
Me: and you said they were translated?
Mo: Wow!
Mo: I honeslty don't know anything about that.
Me: about the abraham scriptures?
Me: they don't teach this? This is amazing!
Me: 4,000 year old scriptures!
Me: written by Abraham himself!
Mo: Yes.
Me: this could be the most amazing find ever!
Me: she is reading more
Me: a traveling salesman sold them to the early LDS church in 1835
Mo: Who doesn't teach this?
Me: with some mummies
Mo: The thing is that other religions don't accept it as scripture...
Me: I am just shocked you are a member and did not know about these 4,000 year old scriptures!
Me: what?
Me: why?
Me: it was translated right?
Mo: That is where careful study and prayer must come in.
Me: ?
Mo: Was it really written by Abraham, is it legit scripture? Careful study and prayer must be done to decide.
Me: the book of abraham in your pearl book says it is the translation
Me: huh? not following
Me: was it translated or not?
Me: you said it was
Me: by powers of god
Mo: That part I am more familiar with.
Mo: I knew about them...
Mo: I studty them almost every day.
Me: my wife read that the "modern" translation did not match what was translated from 1835
Mo: Along with the Book of Mormon...
Me: you study the abraham book every day but did not know about the scrolls rediscovered in 1967??
Mo: What I get confused is not the content of the scriptures but the historical events surrounding them.
Mo: I believe it to be the word of God as given to Abraham.
Me: wait, so the modern scientific translation of the scrolls does not match the 1835 translation?
Mo: So yes, I do believe it to be translated correctly.
Me: my wife said it is just a funeral type writings
Mo: It is, the original was written in a different language.
Me: this according to wikipedia
Me: Mo, this sounds fishy
Mo: It was translated from the language of Abraham to English.
Me: the book of abraham says it was TRANSLATED
Mo: It was translated from the language of Abraham to English.
Me: but the scientific translation does not match??
Me: The language is Egyptian
Mo: Yes, through the inspiriation of God.
Mo: Where did she read that?
Me: so you doubt the modern translation?
Me: on wikipedia
Me: "Neither the recovered papyri nor the facsimiles published with the Book of Abraham bear any direct connection, either historical or textual, to Abraham. Abraham's name does not appear anywhere in the papyri or the facsimiles"
Mo: If I may suggest...
Mo: anyone can post anything on wikipedia.
Me: "Joseph Smith’s interpretation of the facsimiles do not bear any similarity to modern Egyptologists' translations of the text in these figures"

Me: are we arguing over the definition of TRANSLATED?
Mo: I think you perhaps need to read the rest of the article, or check your source...
Me: my source is from a BYU author
Mo: I had Dr. Rhodes as a professor...
Me: Micheal Rhodes
Mo: He definately believes that the Pearl of Great Price was inspired by God.
Me: and he did not speak of the scrolls rediscovered?
Me: With all due respect Mo, I am to believe that they were translated and the scientists and eygyptologists are wrong because you prayed about it?
Mo: I'm not actually sure what we are arguing about. It was translated.
Me: may I ask a personal question?
Me: were you born and raised in this religion?
Me: My wife said we are being objective about this translation and you seem to be being subjective.
Mo: I can assure you that you are misquoting or taking a quote out of context of a BYU professor. I have taken two classes from him.

Me: you told me you never heard about it
Me: you lied to me

Mo: but didn't, and still don't know anyting about...

Mo: I have to go. The lights are turning off.
Me: do Mormons lie about other things?
Mo: Have a nice night.
