Drawers In A Wad

Post by _Sam Harris »

Just got an email from an old acquaintance who is mad about the new George Washington Dollar not having "In God We Trust" on it...

They're calling for a boycott...

Is there nothing worse in the world to complain about???????

Is this for real?

Seems like a complainable action to me. I believe this nation's religious roots should be printed on our money, written on our public buildings, and expressed in our schools.

This was a country supposedly built on RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, yet you're asking for all faiths except Christianity to be suppressed...

Tell them that if they wish to dispose of these dollars, I'd be happy to take them off their hands. Tell them this before you show them the edge of the coin, where this statement is found. See http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/dollarcoin.asp

What is this nations religious roots? How many of our founding fathers were Christian or trusted in God? What was the demographics of the people like back then?

I'm wondering what Christ would say if he, .... well, ..... could say. Would he say something like "render unto Ceaser" and all that? Just wondering.

This isn't the first time she's sent me some "beware of the demise of religion" email that was debunked by scopes. I wish she'd do her own research sometiems, instead of just passing these things on...

I don't think "In God We Trust" was even put on currency until the Civil War. Let me wiki.. :)

K, I was right! My father would be sooo proud! :)
The motto In God We Trust was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the American Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout Christians throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize God on United States coins. From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861.

Apparently it was done at the urgings of citizens. Why now can't citizens rally for it to be removed if they so desire?

I don't really care either way as long as I can spend it.
