But when the Fall occurred, the earth literally fell or moved from the physical presence of God to its present position in our solar system. When all the effects of the Fall of Adam are finally overcome, the earth will literally move back into the presence of God. Here are President Young’s words: ' When the earth was framed and brought into existence and man was placed upon it, it was near the throne of our Father in heaven.... But when man fell, the earth fell into space, and took up its abode in this planetary system.... This is the glory the earth came from, and when it is glorified it will return again unto the presence of the Father, and it will dwell there, and these intelligent beings that I am looking at, if they live worthy of it, will dwell upon this earth.' " (Andrew Skinner, Ensign, March 1997, 22.)

Joseph Smith and John Taylor: "A member of the Church in the days of Joseph Smith reported that the Prophet taught that the time will come when the earth will be restored to its former place in the cosmos and again 'revolve in its original orbit next to Kolob.' …Others who were close to him and who were instructed by him also made statements in harmony with this report. John Taylor wrote that the earth 'was organized near the planet Kolob.'" (Hyrum L. Andrus, God, Man, and the Universe, SLC: Deseret Book Co., 1993, 313.)

Brigham Young: "gave it as his opinion that the Earth did not dwell in the sphere in which it did when it was created, but that it was banished from its more glorious state or orbit of revolution for man's sake" ("Record of Acts of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles," 5 Jan. 1841, quoted in Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook, comps., The Words of Joseph Smith, 1980, 84.)

Brigham Young: "This earthly ball, this little opake substance thrown off into space, is only a speck in the great universe; and when it is celestialized it will go back into the presence of God, where it was first framed." (Journal of Discourses, 9:316-317.)

Lorenzo Snow: "The earth shall be rolled back in pristine purity, into its primeval orbit, and the inhabitants thereof dwell upon it in perfect peace and righteousness." (quoted in Eliza R. Snow Smith, Biography and Family Record of Lorenzo Snow, SLC: Deseret Book Co., 1884, 333.)

Joseph Smith: "This earth will be rolled back into the presence of God and crowned with Celestial Glory." (Andrew F. Ehat and Lyndon W. Cook, comps., The Words of Joseph Smith, 1980, 60; also in Franklin D. Richards, Compendium, 1898, p. 288; and Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith, 1976, 181.)

I think this is beautiful. I believe it to be totally plausible and see no problem with it, and in fact it seems only natural since God is a being who uses symbols so often. Some questions:

When will the earth return?

When did the innitial move occur?

Was that the ice age?

Astronomy - *snort*.

That thread cracks me up. Why, of course the ice age was caused by the earth hurtling through space when man fell! What else could cause such a thing!

It's like some folks just check their brains at the door.

Wanted to add:

I am waiting for a Battlestar Galactica or Kobol reference to be made by someone smart-assy enough to dare. Which would not be me.

I can't get involved on threads like this one. When one rejects the basic rules of reality, there is no amount of rationalization they will buy into.

Well duh! Space is like cold, and when travel through it, it's like, really cold.

(You know there's going to be posts on that thread like "I'm glad to see they're high fiving over at Shades board". But really if we don't high five over here we'd have to slap them stupid over there. I mean these types of posts are malarkey from the starky.)

Indeed. A lot of my posts here are cathartic exercises designed to help me to keep my composure over in the land of the faithful.

I'm still laughing about that one. Mental gymnastics, indeed.

I compare it to the books about Star Trek science. Looking for truth in fiction, or some such.

I was wondering today about the ascension of Jesus. I think traditional Christians tend to see it as just sort of a dramatic exit, where Jesus does a sort of inter-dimensional shift as soon as he's out of sight. In other words, heaven isn't really in the clouds or the sky or anything, and the ascension has no real implications for the geographical location of heaven. But in Mormonism, where the risen Jesus is fundamentally a physical being and Kolob is the literal, physical residence of God, it seems like Jesus' ascension would be just the first, relatively short leg of a literal, long journey. I'm wondering whether Jesus took a spaceship, flew like Superman, teleported, traveled faster than light, etc. Maybe the reason he's taking so long to come again is that he had to travel many light years to get home, during which time relativity says that time would move so much faster for him than for the rest of the universe that he probably won't get back here for a few billion years.

How's that for cheap shots, Will? :-P

I don't even know what to say about this. Is this poster serious?

Are there really adults in this country who somehow missed basic seventh grade earth science?

I suppose there are those, like "flat earthers" who live in some sort of alternate universe where reality is traded in for fantasy.. or something.

Wow!

This idea seems similar to the "Flat Earth" folks who somehow live in an alternate universe where reality is traded for fantasy... or something. ;-)

The TV Show Mythbusters has a host named Adam who often wears a shirt that says: "I reject your reality and I submit my own". Funny but true.
