ps: unless you're a TBM of course, in which case you shouldn't watch these two movies, because they're rated R. It always blows me away how Mormons will miss out on The Shawshank Redemption because of its rating and a few eff words, and will satisfy themselves with Baptists at My Barbecue instead. I remember this one time I was up at my parents' house and I was going to watch The Mission with Jeremy Irons and Robert De Niro, and more family came in and commandeered the machine to watch Singles Ward instead. I crap you not. They didn't want to watch The Mission, I guess because they were afraid of it. Next night I put in The Mission and miraculously some of them sat through it - naked South American Indian flopping boob scenes and all. When it was done I didn't say a word. I didn't have to.

pps: I'm quite sure there's something "wrong", from an LDS perspective, with having two Stephen King movies in my top 5 favorites of all time. Oh well. Mormon culture is crap. Sorry, but there it is.

Yeah. I felt inspired to be a little better person after seeing the Green Mile in spite of it's ironies. Not so much entertaining, but more of a life lesson in human nature.

I love the Shawshank Redemption... for many reasons! I had a college professor one day railing on about crap culture and she mentioned Stephen King. Well, needless to say as a horror nut I'd read everything of his as a teen -- that stung! So, anyway, about halfway through the semester she happens to mention that The Shawshank Redemption is one of her favorite movies.

Yah, I don't understand why some things are okay in LDS culture and others not. Some of the lines seem odd and it's seems a shame that they miss out on some fairly good cinema 'cause they can't see sexuality or listen to language.

I have both movies ,Shawshank Redemption and the Green Mile. Both I feel talks about redemption. Another great movies is Changing Lanes.

By birth I am (was?) a RC. My Bible class teacher, a member of our extended family, ("aunt Elisabeth") has talked about "The Index" which is the list of the forbidden books in RC church. I have asked her to obtain that list, for "avoiding". Poor simple thing as she was, she produced it. (I was 12.)
I DID read most of them, one after another (for example E. Zola). I wasn't sorry.

I am not a fan of porn or of bloody action movies. (or piercing or drugs or any form of aggression)
But, if any person or any group would try to limit me in reading, in watching TV or movie - or in thinking about anything ...

Does handle The Church its members as immatured ? Does it do THIS in the XXI. century ?

Well, I suppose I'm as Jack Mormon as they come, then. LOL (I know Boaz will readily agree..;) )

I think I have at least as many R rated movies in my collection as PG and PG-13.

Shawshank Redemption is a great movie. It's a little heavy, so it's not a movie I can watch every day, but the message is profound. There is a lot of great lessons about not giving up hope, friendship, etc.

Some of my favorite movies are rated R:

The Matrix Trilogy
Troy
Ordinary People
Animal House
The Big Chill
Philadelphia

And then, of course, my favorite TV series, which I have on DVD, is Sex and the City.

I always thought the no rated R movie rule was stupid. So did my parents. When I turned 17, my Dad basically let me use my own judgment on what movies I wanted to see.

Since we've always been a family that has been very into the arts, the ratings weren't a huge issue.
