Desnews article: DNA study by Sorenson links most Native Americans

No wonder LDS Inc had Doublespeak, err DoubleDay make a change to the Book of Mormon!

Ninety-five percent of Native Americans can trace their ancestry to six "founding mothers" who arrived in the New World about 20,000 years ago, says a study by Utah-based Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation and the University of Pavia, Italy.

The date is about when humans first arrived in the Americas, according to the research.

Wow, my seminary teachers taught us that the earth was only ~6,000 years old... Where is this rich Mormon getting this 20,000 year number?

Oh and how about Noah and his big flood?

The story is crumbling isn't it?

Dear GOD! What next?!?!? Monkeys flying out of my butt and screaming that they are our ancestors????

Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation was founded by the wealthiest Utahn, and perhaps the richest Mormon with a net worth of $4.5 billion, John L. Sorenson. He died in January of this year at age 86.

Plausible, possible, probable...thanks. Truth, of whatever it is, will eventually prevail. Always has. Always will. Be assured it does not come through an Exclusive Franchised Conduit to ANY instituted Corporation from a "God" who favours ethnicity, gender or religion.

Knowledge/truth will be 'found' by ANYONE who 'seeks' intelligently, applies discovery and energy to produce the fruits contingent upon such efforts. IMSCO. Warm regards, Roger

OK, the FAIR video must go! Wow!

The comments after the article demonstrate that many believers do not buy into the LGT, science, research, or apologetic reasoning.

Seems there is still pretty strong belief in Noah, the Garden of Eden, and the idea that science is of the devil! ;-)

I notice in the comments on the article cited in the OP that TBMs several times say things like "According to the Bible, the earth was once one single land mass".

What scripture, if any, is the basis for this claim? And when exactly over the last 6000 years was this supposed to have been the case - before or after the flood?

(I am not of course referring to the well-supported view amongst geologists that in the extremely remote past, long before there were any humans, the present separate continents were all part of the hypothetical 'Gondwanaland' supercontinent)

This usually comes from Gen 10:25 with the idea that Peleg means to divide.

No kidding. It looks cheap and it makes the Mormon DNA experts look very cheap. It does harm to the intelligent and careful things they've already said about the problems with some critical DNA arguments. Oh well... FAIR shoots themselves in the foot all the time on this issue. Where's their onetime hero David Stewart MD?

Is that all there is to it? Well as they say over on MAD whenever one quotes something, well, a little 'special' by Brigham Young, give us the context:

Genesis, Chapter 10

1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

2 The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

3 And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

4 And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5 By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

6 And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.

7 And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,

12 And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.

13 And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

14 And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.

15 And Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth,

16 And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,

17 And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

18 And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.

19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.

20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

21 Unto Shem also, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born.

22 The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

23 And the children of Aram; Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Mash.

24 And Arphaxad begat Salah; and Salah begat Eber.

25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

26 And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

27 And Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah,

28 And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,

29 And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan.

30 And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou goest unto Sephar a mount of the east.

31 These are the sons of Shem, after their families, after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations.

32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

How can anyone doubt that all the references to 'division' in this chapter are to the same thing - the dividing-up of the land between the various descendants of Noah? The idea that this is a reference to the break-up of continental land-masses is simply ludicrous, given that there is no evidence at all in the text to support such a far-fetched interpretation.

Oh, wait! The fact that this is the right interpretation comes from the assurance of the Holy Ghost, given directly to TBMs alone. Sorry I spoke.

The apologetic response is "only 95%" trace their geneology back to the 6 founding mothers. That leaves 5% to be the Nephites and Lamanites.

Doubleday is going to have to change the Book of Mormon again to read, " .... amoung the 5% of american inhabitants."
