"Solemn Assembly"

A notice was in my mail-box yesterday of a Solemn Assembly to be held April 5, to sustain new church officers. Self-debating attendance locally?? Could i sustain Monson, presumably, as officiating LDS leader? Yes. As a Prophet (Seer & Revelator) of "God"? No.
Have others received notices? Attend? Sustain, as what? Is this an opportunity to express in public what I/we state anonymously in the safety of our cyber-cell, to any effective purpose?? A wonderful daughter, whose husband is a Bishop, is THE source of my hesitation... Thoughts?? Roger

I was under the impression that a solemn assembly was a closed session. That it was for GA's only. Is that not the case?

Whenever they confirm a new leader they call it a solemn assembly. Content maybe a little different, but the format of the meeting is essentially the same. The term is used in a couple of other instances, but it usually just means "special edition".

Also known as
"Dead Assembly". Facial gestures, twitches of any part of body strictly controlled. Brethren play "Dead" and
bow their heads for the decisions already taken couple weeks ago.
Any opposed?

Thanks solo, as confirmed by the paste below:
Brothers and Sisters,
In the October 1994 session of General Conference, Elder
David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, made
the following statement:
'A solemn assembly, as the name implies, denotes a sacred,
sober, and reverent occasion when the Saints assemble under
the direction of the First Presidency. Solemn assemblies
are used for three purposes: the dedication of temples,
special instruction to priesthood leaders, and sustaining a new
President of the Church. This conference session today is
a solemn assembly for the purpose of sustaining a newly
called Church President and other officers of the Church.'
On Saturday, April 5, 2008, under the direction of the
First Presidency, a solemn assembly will be held to sustain our
new Church President. President Ulloa, our stake
president, is instructing all members and their families that it
would be most appropriate to attend this solemn assembly in
our ward and branch buildings rather than watching or
listening in our homes. We believe that the spirit of a solemn
assembly and the act of sustaining our new Prophet as a group
of assembled saints will invite the spirit into our lives
and will strengthen our testimonies as well as those in our
families
The solemn assembly will be the first session of General
Conference, and will start at 12PM Eastern Standard Time.
Please arrive early and reverently to prepare. Sunday dress is
appropriate.
Not a joyous occasion for some reason?? Still personally pondering my response. Has anyone ever experienced, or exercised a "No, by the same sign" in their LDS life? Warm regards, Roger

I thought a solemn assembly was when everyone does the Hallelujah chorus and waves their handkerchief? (which is really kinda cool to watch).

Especially not support the calling for a GA or higher.

IF my memory serves me correctly, what you describe is called, "The Hosanna Shout." We attended from 600+ miles the opening of the Washington Temple. Yes, it does look impressive. In my then state of ignorance i assumed it was unique to Mormons--wasn't everything to a new convert? :-) But, of course it isn't. Watched on TV in what i think might have been an Islamic service, not sure about that???
I'm going to enquire, through official LDS channels what the consequences of a "no" vote will be. Are they recorded, and the number of such votes publicized in The Church News, etc?
Would be very interesting, and purposeful, IF all of the MDB, and other LDS incalcitrants attended their Branch, Ward, Stake Assemblies to voice, by the uplifted hand (to the square), their objection to naming a person a "Prophet", who in their opinion is not a "Prophet". Church President, Leader yes, but not a "Prophet of "God""...
Will pass on any information gleaned... Warm regardes, Roger

Any inkling as to who this new Apostle will be?
Another relative, an unrelated white dude, a person of color?
