I didn't see a thread...so I'll start one. Well to be more precise I'll copy and paste a poster from MAD who did a good job of putting it all together:

Paul McNabb wrote:At General Conference a few minutes ago, the following membership statistics were announced. These statistics are announced each April during conference. These are the numbers for the end of 2007. I've put in parentheses the numbers from 2006 that were announced in April 2007.

Total number of missions: 348 (344)

Total number of stakes: 2,790 (2,745)
Total number of districts: 618 (630)

Total number of Wards and branches: 27,827 (27,475)

Total number of members: 13,193,999 (12,868,606)

New "children of record" (new children of members): 93,698 (94,006)

Total convert baptisms: 279,218 (272,845)

Total full time missionaries: 52,686 (53,164)

Total temples in operation: 124 (124)

So there were 372,916 new Mormons in 2007, but this does not represent the total increase in membership compared to last year. Church membership rose by 324,793. The difference (48,123) is due to deaths and to people being excommunicated and to people removing their names from the records of the Church (leaving the Church). The total membership number includes people are are completely inactive and with unknown addresses who would prefer to have their names removed from the records of the Church.

Well there you go.

Interesting..

According to the CDC the death rate: 825.9 deaths per 100,000 population
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm

According to church numbers their death rate is 373.9 per 100,000 (48,123/ 12,868,606 ) and that is assuming all 48,123 were deaths. If some percentage were in fact people who were excommunicated/ had names removed then the mortality rate would be even lower.

Hmmm ..

The church probably doesn't even know where 1/2 of its members are. They'll just keep them on the books till they hit 120 years old.

I suspect the Church has a pretty good idea where alot of their "members" are.. in the cemetery.
