Ok, this has got to be one of THE MOST LAME prophecies I have ever heard, yet TBM's LOVE to trumpet this as a victorious, in-your-face "he couldn't have POSSIBLY known that"!!

What, exactly, was there to know?? Can you name one person on this planet whose name is not had for good and evil??

Why is this "prophecy" so impressive to TBM's??

Most people don't fit the prophecy. If you were to scream my name and hurl invectives about it, the question on everyone's mind would be, "Who?"

The prophecy didn't say everyone in the world would know his name for good and evil. In fact, I'd wager there are a few billion people that have never heard about Mormonism at all, let alone Joseph Smith.

its lke saying "people will love me or hate me". I think he threw in the "good" as a hedge.

Well, the post title left out the end. It reads 'name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues'

At the time Joseph wrote this the Church was known in the U.S. and work was just starting in Europe. If you take Joseph's word that it was said much earlier then that he would be known outside the U.S. was a big prediction. Lots of small sects were popping up, very few became international and he had no reason to think he could found such a Church. I think the 'good and evil' portion of the prophecy is just to tell Joseph that being well-known will have a serious downside.

Even so....what if every single leader of every single sect made this statement??

What is the risk here? If Mormonism had died out in the first year, and nobody outside of Palmyra knew his name, nobody would even know the prophecy was made. But if the church grew, of COURSE people all over the world would know his name.

Although I don't have proof, I seriously doubt that his name is known among all nations, kindreds and tongues. The Mormon religion is a small blip on the religious radar. It barely registers. I mean, "He started the Mormon church" was a question (err..answer) on Jeopardy once! Joseph Smith name is relegated to game show trivia!!

Funny, that one. Let's see. If I make myself a blip on the map for some nutcase beliefs because a handful of nutcases fall for it, then that means my name will be had for good and evil. .000001 percent of the population for good, and 99.999999 for evil. lol.

But you can just make it of yourself and if you can get some fame and do outragious things then it will aoutomatically be true.
Everyone should make that claim and then if it comes true they are prophets. Bill Gates should have said it just in case he became what he became.

I'm now going to say it:' My name should be had for good and evil among all nations, kindreds, and tongues'
Now I have nothing to lose. If i am wrong no matter. if I am right then wheeeee --I am a prophet! (not)

He was setting us up to discount any valid criticisms or future debunking of his work, because "it was prophesied" that people would de-bunk and criticize. He knew it would happen - don't you think? So, instead of listening to the arguments, we can turn our head and say "it was prophesied that this would happen." Blame it all on Satan, and don't, don't read it.
