Church Ball was banned in my stake because of fights. The SP banned it and as soon as when he was released the first item on the Agenda for the new SP was to start playing ball again.

LOL. Having played both volleyball and basketball in a carpeted "cultural hall", I know exactly what you mean by rug burns from playing ball. This is definitely a unique Mormonism, likely foreign to most other folks.
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe / But at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Ah, the memories. I don't miss them at all.
My Sweet Pickles' dad reffed for a few years. He not only threw players out of the game, he threw them out of the building. It was a sight to behold.
Now, no one here has time to play games any more. And not enough young people are coming back to the stake warrent a stake-wide program. Heck, they even cut out softball! Blasphemy!

I have a testimony of Church ball. Thou shalt play it.

This comment was pretty funny:
Jesus wouldn't start a fight, he'd probably let the other team win, though. That would start a fight with his own teammates wanting to throw down with him because he would call his own fouls every time, allow the opposing players easy lay-ups, and would probably high-five the opposing team every time they scored. If an opposing player fell down he'd help pick them back up. If someone fouled him on the way to the basket, he'd most likely ask the ref to forgive the player and not take his free throws. Then Jesus' teammates would complain at him and he would probably tell them to do likewise which would get him ostracized from his own team and probably beat up by them. History would sort of repeat itself on the court.
I'm all about a good game, but church ball has a bad rep for a reason and should be considered good practice ground for trying to be Christ-like in competitive situations.
I detest my loose style and my libertine sentiments. I thank God, who has removed from my eyes the veil...

The last few times I was involved it seems that the bad behavior was a little forced. Kind of like a 5 year old who tells a joke, everyone laughs, and then he keeps telling the exact same joke over and over. It seems that in Church ball the reputation feeds the behavior and some people intentionally try to behave badly because that is what you are supposed to do.

I have nothing for contempt concerning church sports. It is an example of a situation in which the males have permission to behave like asses. I based part of my opinion on other missionaries by observing their behavior while playing. The sad fact is that others opinions were based on performance, not the elbows dispatched to the faces of opposing players.
When we would play ball out in the community outside of a cultural hall the game would be toned down. Funny.
