Stop Harvesting Those Records

In a
"not so fast" move, Catholic vs. LDS Churches, Round Two, the Vatican has released a statement that it will no longer release parish records to the LDS Church, since they are used for the purpose of doing proxy baptisms and other ordinances in LDS temples.
The letter apparently went out in early April to Catholic bishops instructing them not to release parish records to the LDS Church.
That not only puts a damper on genealogical research, but sends another signal to Salt Lake City that they are not considered to be a part of the greater "Christian" community.

There are a couple of threads going on this on RFM already, including one from Steve Benson.

Interesting.
Seems a shame for those who rely on those records to complete their genealogical records (both LDS and non-LDS), but what a way for the Catholics to make a statement on baptism.

Doesn't seem to be a problem.....
"We don't have an issue with the fact that the Catholic Church doesn't recognize our baptisms, because we don't recognize theirs," Otterson said. "It's a difference of belief."
"We have a policy not to give out baptismal records to anyone unless they are entitled to have them," Msgr. Fitzgerald said of his diocese. "That isn't just for the Church of the Latter-day Saints. That is for all groups."
No problem. Sounds like Catholics and former Catholics are free to access them. The work will get done one way or the other. As I recall with the similar Jewish issue, those with Jewish ancestry are still free to have the work done.

That's quite interesting, as the first century Saints wouldn't have had a clue what to do with either Roman Catholic or Protestant Christianity, especially Protestantism's vast array of sects, factions, and eclectic itinerant ministries.

Well this puts a dampener on the name extraction program.

.
Well we knew that already but I am not sure why this makes it any clearer. Mormons ought to stick to line that they are the Christian Church and the others just apostate wannabees.

FLDS ought to stick to line that they are the heirs of Joseph Smith and the LDS are just apostate wannabees.

This failure to share records is a blow to future researchers from many branches of inquiry.

I'm under the impression that a significant amount of parish records worldwide have already been harvested and microfilmed by the LDS Church, as it appears to be the single biggest source for genealogical research and name extraction. This seems to only affect more recent records going forward.
I'm not sure it adds anything to what Catholics already said about baptism a few years ago, but it reinforces the divide between the two faiths on what constitutes Christian baptism.

This statement is striking in its complete absence of having anything really to do with the issue at hand.
What it does point out is Mormon arrogance, which is of world renown.
Now, if some other church wanted to waltz into 50 N. Temple and ask for LDS Church ordinance records to microfilm, do you suppose that the LDS Church would gladly hand them over? Yet that's what researchers, under the arm of being part of the Genealogical Society, have done for years, gone worldwide to Catholic and Protestant churches and asked to copy their records.
Would anyone similarly have been able to walk into a local ward or branch, who was not LDS, and ask the local leadership if they could have access to ordinance records?
Not on your life.
