This is a new one to me...

Post by _Scottie »

I was talking with one of my friends about the whole anti-banking scheme that Joseph Smith created and she said something about how Joseph Smith had barrels where the top layer was gold, but it was dirt underneath.

This is a new one to me! Is this true?

I heard coins on top and rocks underneath. One person came in to redeem the notes and was told he couldn't do it and he knew then they were worthless - then.

There's a little bit of truth in both posts. They were boxes, not barrels, and it rocks underneath, not dirt.

If I remember correctly, I believe they were bank boxes--a layer of silver coin on top, rocks and whatnot beneath.

Brodie discusses this in NMKMH.

This would be a good point to be pursued further in discussions with TBMs.

If you are a believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, then please tell me: Why, in your opinion, did Joseph Smith have rocks underneath gold or silver coins in his Kirtland Bank vault?

Everything about this man SCREAMS con artist.

The silence from the apologists is deafening here.

They were likely something even more valuable: seerstones!

When you hear claims like this, you must ask for the evidence. There is no evidence to support this claim.

I don't have the issues with me right now, but I have seen some articles that approach the Banking episode:

Scott H. Partridge, "The Failure of the Kirtland Safety Society," Brigham Young University Studies 12:4 (Summer 1972): 446–447 and Dale W. Adams, "Chartering the Kirtland Bank," Brigham Young University Studies 23:4 (Fall 1983): 477–478.

CK- do you know where in NMKMH she discusses the anti-bank?
One moment in annihilation's waste,
one moment, of the well of life to taste-
The stars are setting and the caravan
starts for the dawn of nothing; Oh, make haste!
