I think in the future they may place the Book of Mormon in Asia.

Horses, Elephants and Ancestors to the American Indian could only be found there.

What an inspired idea!

Just think of it ... the Chinese are the LAMANITES! Think of the possibilities when the mishies are finally allowed to go in there ... the tithing, the tithing!

Apologists consider the "promised land set aside thingy" as land that only consists of a very small area... while many of us were taught (and the Book of Mormon suggests), the promised land was land saved from all others for Lehi & Co., seems today it means only the little piece of land upon which they actually landed and came ashore.

Just find a bit of piece of land in China that wasn't inhabited until about 600 BCE and you are good to go! :-)

Actually, If I recall correctly Sunstone published an article on this a few years where the author claimed some Eastern area was indeed the land of the Nephites. While it obviously didn't set well with apologists it did have some good points.

The Unlimited Geography Theory (ULT) is the latest one to emerge, which came to light when I was typing this sentence a few seconds ago. The UTL purports that there are actually dozens of Hills Cumorah, and the Book of Mormon's true location can never really be known. The Angel Moroni was charged with taking the plates from their resting place and putting them into Joseph Smith's geographical area so he could produce this great work. This makes the most sense since listening to the church's own pronouncements about the Hill Cumorah and Book of Mormon peoples is frowned upon by most Book of Mormon scholars and academics.

Yeah, that article was pretty funny.

The guy sets it in Malaysia-Thailand (Well, there is a narrow neck there!). It's as good an argument as any. :)

Actually, the blog comments on Blake Ostler's article and this guy with the Asian thesis are quite fascinating. They can be easily accessed on the Sunstone blog.

12 And I looked and beheld a man among the Gentiles, who was separated from the seed of my brethren by the many waters; and I beheld the Spirit of God, that it came down and wrought upon the man; and he went forth upon the many waters, even unto the seed of my brethren, who were in the promised land.

(Book of Mormon | 1 Nephi 13:12)

If you look at 1 Nephi 13 (the entire chapter), there is no other explanation than the one given by Joseph Smith.

The promised land is primarilly in the United States of America
Columbus found the degenerate lamanites in their promised land
White and delightsome people claimed the promised land as their own (Gentiles) because they were seeking to be free from bondage
Specific reference to the revolutionary war (1780's) fought in the promised land and the surrounding waters.
The Catholic church referenced
The oppression of the American Indian upon the promised land by the white and delightsome Gentiles
(By the way, Columbus and the other Spaniards were most likely olive skinned - delightsome but certainly not white)

Smith (or the true Book of Mormon writer) wrote from the perspective based on the faithful US history taught in protestant Christian schools during Joseph Smith's time period.

The Asia referrence is really no more rediculous than all the other theories since Joseph Smith and the book.

It's remarkable that men who consider themselves scholars (self proclaimed or otherwise) never read enough of the Book of Mormon to recognize how ignorant they really are.

Too inconsistent with Book of Mormon statements about the colonization and constitutionalization etc. of the promised land. The geographical doctrine will always remain in this, the western hemisphere.

I think those areas have constitutions - and elephants and horses and are the ancestors of the American Indian and they have chariots and wars. I think they have really beautiful beaches too.

Their governments are nothing like that described in the Book of Mormon as being necessary to maintain the blessings of being a promised land.
