I wonder how widespread child sexual abuse is within the Mormon priesthood? I wonder what steps are being taken to prevent this from happening in the future? Background checks? Anything?

What do you expect; Church hold a press conference, a special tabernacle meeting
on the subject?
What steps exactly proposing that needs to be taken?
Like separating victim from perpetrator?

I'm not sure which question to take seriously, but I will tell you this. I have two daughters that spend their Summers in Utah. They're forced or coerced to go to the Mormon church when in Utah. So, yes, in fact I would like to know if the Mormon church is taking any measures, whatsoever, to ensure their safety when they're away from me. It's extremely unsettling to me that my kids could be alone, with an adult male, at any point, and the only prevention against predation is "the Spirit".

I think that background checks should be done on all primary teachers, and any Sunday School teachers where youth are involved.

I know that in primary, they do not allow males to teach classes alone. The classes need to be team taught with the spouse. They are also in the process of mandating windows on all of the classroom doors.

In my experience it is not wide spread. In my experience when there is such and offender they get no where near kids. No teaching, no HT assignments, nothing even after they may have gone through a repentance process. If a member is disciplined for child abuse their record is notated with this forever so leader know and can act accordingly.

No and no, at least in my experience. However, I think we should do this and in fact it seems there are easy resources available to do this these days. But I think you have to disclose it. I know in my company we do background checks on potential employees but we let them know about it and put it as a condition of employment.

It depends on the state. SLC had a hot line number that bishops and SPs are supposed to use when faced with abuse type issues. They call fgor help in understanding the legal requirements for their respective state and to get guidance on what they should and should not say and do.
