Parley Pratt wrote in 1838 that the Book of Mormon

set the time for the overthrow of our government and all other Gentile governments on the American continent, but the way and means of this utter destruction are clearly foretold, namely the remnant of Jacob [the Indians] will go through among the Gentiles and tear them to pieces, like a lion among the flocks of sheep.…This destruction includes an utter overthrow, and desolation of all our cities, Forts, and Strong Holds—an entire annihilation of our race, except such as embrace the covenant, and are numbered among Israel.

Pratt also added,

I will state as a prophecy, that there will not be an unbelieving Gentile upon this continent 50 years hence; and if they are not greatly scourged, and in a great measure overthrown, within five or ten years of this date, then the Book of Mormon will have proved itself false.

It would appear that according to this early Mormon apostle, the case is closed. The Book of Mormon is false; game over.

Umm, he said that his words were a 'prophecy'. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

He was speaking as a Prophet, Seer, and Revelator. Which, in practical terms, means he was speaking as a man.

His brother, Orson, also predicted that if Mormons didn't return to Missouri, and a temple built, in their lifetime, then Joseph was a false prophet.

Enter 20th century "apologetics". Why not just own up to it? Because this is the "faith-destroying" element.

The problem for LDS 'prophets' in the nineteenth (and much of the twentieth) century, was that they didn't know enough about the way that prophecy in the good old days (when God spoke Hebrew) used to work.

Prophecy as practised by the real experts, the ones whose writings got into the Bible, was frequently not about telling people what was going to happen. It was about telling them what had already happened, but using a special form of prophetic diction that sounded as if they were somebody a long time ago predicting what was going to happen later. This is of course a tremendously holy thing to do, and God frequently tells us important things this way. It is very wrong to be presentist about this sort of thing, and use words like "fake".

And of course the great thing about the good old way of doing prophecy was that it was guaranteed to be right! There's inspiration for you.

When was Parley chosen as a prophet?

This is PPP. I was expecting from the title to see a Book of Mormon quote. In other words, the title is wrong and the Book of Mormon has not proven itself false.
